marlyb...you give some good insight on the matter

while i don't want to "hijack" this thread with the Common issue, it is good to be able to discuss it in a civil manner...

Common made the comment about respecting police and military on his twitter page. he has a huge following so many saw it.  i am simply taking him at his word.  that "letter" poem was at least two years ago and the other song was an older CD.  what he actually performed at the WH was totally different.

I am proof that people can change. look back two years and i was cussing and fussing. i wasn't as patient on calls. it can happen.

Ice-T is a good example of how artists just put on a show. he had one of the worst anti cop songs of all time. what is he known for now? portraying a awesome detective on TV.  if YOU choose to look back at his past, then you'll never see him as a talented actor.

and i feel you hit it on the head when you said "Common is articulating race rage-based upon horrendous past injustices". not all of us LEOs are the good people we would hope they were. there are some of us who do abuse their authority. and no i am NOT saying they deserve to be killed. i am saying that sometimes our own make people feel a certain way torwards ALL of us. not fair

There is good and bad in all walks of life. No disagreement there. And I do believe that some people can change if they really want to, not just to safice someone temporarily.  However, considering it was police memorial week, the pres couldn't be bothered to make an appearance, and common being at the white house sent out a bad message to all that put their lives on the line everyday, not to mention family members that were there in support and remembrance. To me thats just plain out disrespect and a slap in the face. My big problem with the whole thing is Obama. His utter disrespect for law enforcement makes me sick. I know you'll disgree with me on this and thats fine. I'm not looking to pick a fight, just voicing my opinion. Respect is something that seems to be lost now adays, no matter who one is or what they do for a living.

I find it ironic about ICE-T. But I have to admit I do like him on that show

i'm finally back home!

ranger, i respect you ever the more for even trying to understand. i wasn't always this way and its an everyday process.  i will say that my life has been much better since though! this whole thing has been a learning experience for me.  as for cutting you off. some of y'all on this site have years of knowledge and different insights that could prove useful in my life or career. cutting you off for past "transgressions" would hurt who exactly? you're cool in my book sir!

mz66, if you're referring to me then yes i have a release method. spiritually i pray. worldly i play videogames. i am an avid gamer.  on xbox live i play in a clan called the [LAW]. by myself i change my clan name to [Gzus].

andrea312, no worry of fight picking here. that is where holding grudges comes into play. i can't tell you how to spend your time anytime during the year. nor can we tell the Prez. i am not easily offended.  i don't look to a political figure for my happiness so its hard for them to disrespect me.  my life goes along just fine regardless of who is at the WH or any house whenever.

i was confused myself on the whole Police Week thing anyway because the offical site says that its the week of May 15th. well if this week starts on Sunday the 15th, then the whole poem thing didn't happen on Police Week. maybe i missed something but folks on my facebook and on here have been wishing me happy Police Week all THIS week. my dept had our memorial the first week of May and sent our FOP officers this week. see my confusion?

WE LEOs are where the rubber hits the road. we control our respect level and how the public views us. i have said before, i honor the fallen officer by serving with honor and integrity.  Prez, Gov, Mayor don't make a difference in how we interact daily with each other or the community

ANDDDDDDDDDD I AM SO HAPPY WE HAVE MOVED TO A NEW PAGE...i was scrolling fast to skip the hugging guys on page 5...lol

j/k...i can and will. but no more details...

back to a respect thought.

i like the thing we do with our Presidents both past & present.  We refer to them as President forever after their term. No matter how you feel/felt about them, we respect them by calling them Mr. President. i like that about us. just wish more folks did it. everytime they show Pres Bush at a Rangers game its cool to see him enjoying the game. well as long as they aren't playing the Yankees.

I always believe no question is a stupid question. just stupid people.  Stupid people can be weeded out very easily.  I had an issue recently with the question about ride a longs.  I did not have the time to read all the posts as I do not have time to read them this time either.  But I had an experience I can share I will share.  That does not give another member the implied consent to correct me.  I this instance I mentioned the ride a long should have comfortable shoes which I had read in a previous post and wanted to share in my experience.  Then another member decided to correct me by stating I was repeating a previous post.  In that instance I took offense because I wasn't asking for someones point of view to my post I was simply adding my 2 cents to reinforce the importance of comfortable shoes.  I laugh now at it because in the field I would have been all over that person and I must remind myself this is a forum and some people just live to correct or try to correct others.  These are the type of people that drive me nuts, sorry turns out I am venting on here but regardless I believe we should give some the benefit of the doubt before we label them as trolls and handle that appropriately.

lol I noticed we went off topic here for a bit but either way thats what I got to say about the topic.

i understand your incident. i just recently wanted to ask about an Explorers post issue. I did a search and even then it took a while to weed out the previous posts. sometimes a question is simply a question. patience is a virtue

Even though I didn't have the time to read through all the replies, I feel that my Brother has hit it right on the head. Even though I may have scratched my head more than once with some of the questions on here over the past months, I always will try and answer them in a respectful manner. I don't recall all of my calls having Einsteins there when I got there. Always treat others with respect and never assume.

I have watched the forums for a long time now, we have had the old gang that gave no one a chance when they got here and asked questions (even stupid ones) and we have given some a chance before jumping them and calling them out.

It used to be so bad that TheSarge created the Fight Club because someone was always calling out a member about this or that. It appears that we are headed down that highway again and I for one don't like it.

People come here for answers to their questions and although to us, because we have seen the questions in one form or another many times, they are dumb questions or ones that should be common sense.

I think that we should give a person a running chance to explain their question or themselves prior to us badgering them and making them feel stupid.

I am always in the mood for a good troll whacking so that we can give them heck and make them miserable enough that they hang themselves and get sanctioned.

Remember, people come here for help just like they call or come by your station for one of us to help them, Treat them with respect until they prove that they don't deserve our respect, you would do it if you were at work why not here?

I believe that we have lost some very good members, both old and new alike because of this. What do you all think? I am open to your suggestions and ideas on how to keep our membership and friendships growing.

BUMP BUMP BUMP. I have been a member of this site for some time, and rarely log in anymore because of this or other forums that do not seem to make a whole lot of sense anymore. I dont know just me I suppose.

I think that when Jesus was here even his owned poeple did not respected him , so this goes way back. Before you respected others , you have to respected yourself, and to get respect you have to give it first.

I disagree! I will be civil and even helpful but respect is something that is earned and earned over time. Respect is something that is reserved for those that earn it and to give it away freely diminishes it's value. Like I said, I will be civil, kind and friendly and helpful to everyone I can but my respect is reserved for those worthy of it.

I'm old school.  Showing respect is society's most polite form. It is a standard measure of regard.  I don't believe polite society should wait to see 'respect earned' before affording respect to those who have accomplished a station in life.  Err on the part of the conservative.  Why not simply wait to seize the opportunity to look like a jackass?

Youth in particular should, as a matter of course, afford respect to society's authority figures such as clergy, teachers, law enforcement, physicians, etc. Youth can always rebel, and they do, but they will have had a foundation instilled.

I loathe the idea of rationing respect - that elders must 'earn' the respect of youth before youth is obliged to show it.  Such poor guidance is why school cultures have broken down.

Common civility carries a pitfall.  Civility is shorn of the deference that is the hallmark of respect.  As such, common civility carries a message of disrespect - often an unintended one.  When one uses mere common civility where respect was due, or even ordinary politeness, one identifies oneself as a lout.  Right now, we have a society full of louts lumbering around in our public spaces.  They all think they are civil as h*ll.

Setting bare civility as the baseline, no wonder society sees so many stupid civilian/police confrontations.

Oh come on MarlyB, you know what I meant. I do show respect to those who have accomplished certain goals in life such as LEO's and Military and those who have acquired positions of leadership both in civilian and government careers. Let's not play the nit-picking BS with me okay? You want respect, you need to earn it. Most elders HAVE earned it. I think you know darn well what I meant when I say that people need to earn respect, not to me personally as if they come to me a blank slate, but to society in general. What you experience when interacting with these individuals can and do make the 'respect meter' go up or down.

Great to see this particular thread revived. In my era I was trained by my parents, school and church that It is not only common practice, but my honor bound duty as a decent citizen to display respect toward others. This should be the attitude of all,no matter what his or her vocation is.Initally we shoud ALL treat one another with respect untill he/she displays by their words/actions that he /she is not deserving of said respect. There are,at times, unfortunately that I have not lived up to this standard.

One only has to look back at some of the old responses to this thread to see what kind of guano can occur when people don't start with respect. Like MarlyB and Dave, I too was raised to respect first. Why start with any other presumption? I don't see any value in that.

amen mz66...

i just had a guy i cited back in 2002 approach me while i was out in a project area speaking with some kids...he came up and shook my hand and told me about our encounter back in '02...he said that it was good to see that the respect i showed him on that traffic stop wasn't fake...he was a total butthead with me but i stayed respectful and professional...this was before we had cameras and mics...i told him that i was thankful that i treated him with respect back then or else we wouldn't have had the current encounter...what if i had responded to his disrespect with my own version?  he could decided that it was finally time to get some pay back after all these years...ambushes happen...yet, our positive coming back together allowed the kids to see another grown man and i having a civil convo...who knows what impact that will have on them...be respectful folks...

man, its good to be back...just like old times!

Nope, Robo we totally disagree on the "respect with-held until earned" approach to social interactions in civil society.  I believe showing respect should be an indispensible form of daily etiquette.

However I have no doubt in my mind that you afford beaucoup respect to those holding positions of leadership, etc.  And please, let no one imagine I am above behaving like a total arsche sometimes purely for the mischief of it.

I am only referring to certain by-gone standards of conduct.  You know. Two customers bump into each other in WalMart, and each simultaneously excuses himself.  That is a measure of respect - right there.

But whoops dismissing my opinion as "playing the nit-picking BS" with you in a public forum is the height of disrespect, Robo. But I will let it slide since we are cyber-friends.

Now drop and give me forty.
