Where would Sgt rank compared to detective? I found some articles that described the duties of both but I am looking for more of how they rank. Is a Sgt higher then a detective? Can a Sgt be a detective? What would it take for an Officer to get promoted to Sgt or detective? Also, what about the different types  This isn't for a school project its just for my own personal knowledge so I can better define what my ultimate goal is.

really depends on the department.  we go sgt, lt, capt.  and detectives rank with Lt's.

What was just posted was probably a poor attempt at humor, wit, or sarcasm. It;s called breakin balls, get used to it.

In most agencies (although there are always exceptions) the Detective rank falls between Patrolman and Sergeant.  A Detective can be promoted to Det/Sgt, Det/Lt, Capt. of Detectives, Deputy Chief of Detectives and Chief of Detectives.

With some minor variations depending upon the specific agency, the rank structure would be as follows.......

Patrolman, Sheriffs Officer

Detective

Corporal

Sergeant-Det. Sgt.

Lieutenant-Det. Lt.

Captain-Capt. of Detectives

Major

Deputy Chief-DC of Detectives

Chief/Sheriff-Chief of Detectives

Some agencies do not have the Corporal or Major ranks in  their chain-of-command.

I suppose your ultimate goal should be surviving til retirement. As far rank, you'll figure it out when and if you get there.

In my service Sergeants and Detectives are considered to be equal rank. Different duties, but same pay and seniority.

Our rank structure is as follows:

  • Recruit Constable

  • Constable

  • Sergeant/Detective

  • Staff Sergeant

  • Inspector

  • Superintendent

  • Deputy Chief

  • Chief

In may dept.  detective is not a rank it is a job assignment no different than k9, school resourse officer, or patrol.  Sgt. is a rank which can hold any job assignment.  I for example am a lieutenant and also a detective.  If i went back to patrol I would still be a lieutenant but no longer a detective.  You are talking about apples and oranges here.

My dept is the same as MMMM above.  I'm a Sergeant assigned to detectives.  All of our assignments, except patrol, are on a mandatory rotation of about 5 years.  So after my 5 I'll go back to patrol as a Sergeant and the detectives go back as officers.  But SWAT, K-9, etc, are considered collateral and are not subject to rotation.  So I can stay on SWAT while I rotate to detectives, however due to the obvious K-9 is restricted to patrol or similar assignments where the dog would still get used.  Wow this more confusing than I thought.

In the depts I have worked for,Sgt, Lt, Capt, Major are all supervisory ranks. Detect. is an investigative promotion that can encompass all ranks and is considered a step up from officer if you are not a Sgt. or above.

It seems in teh South anyway that Detective is just an assigned position...and carries no "rank" like it may up north. In fact, you probably wont even get a raise in some southern GA departments when you make Detective. Strange how it varies from one state or region to another.

For our agency and most around this area, detective isnt a rank its a position held regarding a particular division you are in. Detectives can hold the rank of deputy (and the 6 pay grades within that) sergeant, or LT (if he is the head of that division.) Also, detectives get "detective pay" a monthly incentive pay for that assigned billet, not unlike two incentives of equipment allowance and the uniform allowance we get in our division.

My agency is like most others, Detective is a position. There is no promotion or pay raise, they Officers assigned to Investigations get an unmarked car and get to wear a shirt and tie to work. Then there are people like me, my rank is that of a Police Officer I, but I am assigned to the Traffic Unit as an Investigator. I wear a uniform, drive a marked car, and have an office job for the most part.

The bigger the agency the more "specialized" jobs you'll find. I'll echo what another person posted, make your goal surviving this job until retirement...the rest well fall into place. If you are looking for the job within an agency that pays the most you're looking into the wrong profession. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors.

In New Jersey civil service agencies, a detective holds no rank over that of an officer assigned to patrol. In our PD, detectives receive a stipend for clothing (over and above our clothing allowance), they work outside of our schedule (weekends off - no midnights), and have their own supervisors (a Sgt. and Lt.).
