BELFIELD, N.D. (AP) - Law officers responding to a shooting near Belfield shot and killed a man from the southwest North Dakota town who they said pointed a gun at them following a car chase.
Stark County Sheriff Clarence Tuhy said officers from the Highway Patrol and the Belfield Police Department fired at the man Tuesday afternoon. Authorities did not immediately identify the man or the officers involved.
Tuhy said the officers were responding to a report that a man had been shot when they spotted a vehicle leaving a residence they were investigating along U.S. Highway 85 north of Belfield.
"They tried to stop him and he wouldn't stop, so a pursuit ensued," the sheriff said.
The chase ended at a warehouse on the south edge of Belfield.
"When he exited his vehicle, he had a handgun in his hand and as he pointed it at officers, the officers ended up shooting him," Tuhy said.
"He said the man was shot multiple times and died at the scene. Tuhy said it was unclear if the man fired his gun. Authorities did not identify the man who was shot at the home. He was taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.
