Good afternoon,

I was previewing the topics of dicussion and noticed that their are no computer help dicussion listed.

So here you go I have been computer literate since 1990 (thats when I wrote my first program at age 13), I have stayed current and up to snuff in reguards to Security Information Systems (computer security).     I have a BA in Computer Sciences and am willing to share my knowladge to the Police Link family.  I will answer all ?'s in reguards to Windows, Apple and my personal favriote LINUX.

I will not give you information that will harm another Police Link family member or any one else, I am what is considered a "white hat" computer geek.

So bring all the ?'s you want.

I plan on checking the topic status at least everyday and I will reply as soon as I can (within a couple of days)

I look forward to hearing the ?'s

Almost forgot, if your security settings are too strict for Police Link (as is my case) then you will not be able to post pictures.

Does anyone else have a problem with PL running slow.   Sometimes I think I am back to dial up.    I'm running Windows XP on my desktop.   I put PL in my safe list and in the compatablilty mode.    The only way I can get it back is to turn off the computer.   I have cable and i am the only one on it from the pole to the house.    Thanks in advance for any help.

That happens with me too Ginny.  A few weeks ago, it was really bad.  I had to do some updates on my IMac computer and it solved the slow issues, but sometimes it can still be a bit slow but not nearly as bad unless I do updates again.

Being "bogged" down or kicked out of your network sucks a big "woo".

Even if you're extremely careful about how you use your computer and never download questionable material, over time it is inevitable that your system will accumulate unwanted registry entries, errors, clutter and debris.

The most common causes are the installation and removal of software, online games, application crashes and upgrades of software programs.

Remove any old programs that you don't even use any more via "add or remove programs"

I would perform a disk clean up.

locate your C: drive, usually accesable via - My Computer, right click on your local hard drive or C: drive; select properties.  a properties box will appear from this point you have access to all the disck cleanup tools provided by microsoft.

I would perform a Defragmentation of the hard drive, Defrag is located under the tools tab.

Once the loooooooooooonnnnnngggg process of defrag is complete

go to the general tab and perform a disk cleanup,  after clicking disk cleanup a pop up box will appear  called disk cleanup for what ever drive you are cleaning.

You will see a list with check box's next to them, go down the list and make sure only temp internet files and temp offline files are selected. These will remove any extra cookie build up in you computers temp. memorie.

Performe these simple features in Windows and see what happens.

If you have multiple anti-virus programs; these could also be "bogging" you down.  Anti-virus programs work great, not all the anti-virus programs are compatable.. check to see if your anti-virus programs work well with each other. To perform a compatability check I would do a simple search on the internet (yahoo, google, ask geeves any will do) their should be information provided for you.

What I have to prevent this problem

I downloaded a free virus removal program called Malwarebytes, this is a free anti-virus program

download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

and CCLEANER, this is a free registry cleaner (it use to be called Crap Cleaner since that is what it does; it removes excessive junk you collect while on the internet.)

download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

both are free to use, and safe to use on their default settings.

I hope this will get you started off in the right direction, Please let me know if this helped or not.

Try reducing the photo size by cropping the picture to only what you need... or maybe you have tried that.  I do know that it will reduce the KB size of the photo and the length.. width...  Not sure if that is the issue or not.

Looked fine to me. I have my camera set to the 'email' setting, whcih keeps the pictures relatively small. I have no clue as how to resize the larger photos.

Most pictures you can make the first number 720 and the 2nd number will automatically adjust, I did yours so it fits better

Thanks Sarge.  I actually had my laptop looked at.  Apple put a recall on my model so unfortunately my data is gone but I can now use my laptop again for internet and whatever else.  Daily/weekly backups should of been done.

Under the insert/edit image button there is a width and height area, I change the width to 720 and the height changes automatically to match

I downloaded the free version of Easy Thumbnails .   I like to send pictures in emails rather than an attachment so I reduce them so you can see the whole picture at once.   You can make them any size you want.
