LA FAMILIA BECAME  LA COSA NOSTRA when it became americanized back in the day. to be one ya gotta know from where  ya come. get it? What started out a while ago as a post on u/c assignments has become a sort of saga about working undercover against an organized crime organization during the mid to late 70's. I have accumulated pages of scribbled notes and memo to myself and hope to be able to educate, for that is what this is ultimately for, TO EDUCATE, to pass on to those who go after me.. how to survive....

I had graduated from the new york city police department ORGANIZED CRIME CONTROL BUREAU  investigator course in late 74, returned to the 77 awaiting orders to plainclothes when the bomb dropped.

MAYOR ABRAHAM BEAME ANNOUNCED THE LAYOFF THIS EVENING OF FIVE THOUSAND (5,000) NEW YORK CITY POLICE OFFICERS

all at once everyones worlds was crushed, we lad just gone thru four years fighting the BLA, and now laying off 5000 cops, the  youngest and most active? whole commands were decimated,. plainclothes and  narcotics units were downsized or all together disbanded and THE MUTTS AND NEED DO GOODS KNEW IT.

BLUE FLU, COPS CALLING IN SICK, COMMANDS SERIOUSLY UNDERSTAFFED, and i got an ex wife wantin more m o n e y !

night differential, rising crime, collars for dollars, if ya gotta go out, go out with the best...

From:     Police Officer Mikies place shield #19844, 77th anti crime team

To:          Commanding Officer, 77th Precinct

Subject: REQUEST TRANSFER TO STEADY MIDNIGHT PLATOON WITH SERGEANT STINSON. STINSONS RAIDERS.

SERGEANT BILLY STINSON WAS A BIG BLOND HAIRED SIX FOOTER, WORKED STEADY MIDNIGHTS IN THE 77TH PRECINCT DURING THE LATE 70-EARLY 80'S. HIS MEN WHO WORKED UNDER HIM WERE KNOWN AS "stinsons raiders". I found an unusual partner in one Mario I. a PBA delegate  who was doomed forever to work in a shit house; a cop who would take your back in a second, but not take a collar if your life depended on it,. WHAT A COUPLE WE MADE>>>> A CRAZY COP LOOKIN ALL THE TIME WITH A PARTNER WHO WOULD BACK HIM UP AND THEN SLEEP WHILE I DID ALL THE PAPER WORK. ME AND MARIO JOINED STINSONS RAIDERS IN 75, TOOK SECTOR IDA/JOHN AND WITHIN ONE WEEK-

IN THE 77 PRECINCT, WE HAVE A SIGNAL 10-13, ASSIST PATROLMAN, SIGNAL 10-13-shots fired eastern parkway and franklin avenue, units responding?

77 ida/john on the way..

to understand the war against organized crime (the italian mafia in this instance)

REMEMBER, TODAY, THE ASIAN TRIADS MAKE MORE MONEY IN ONE WEEK THAN THE MOB WOULD HAVE HOPED TO MAKE IN A MONTH, AND WHO CAN ARGUE ABOUT THE RUTHLESSNESS AND FAR REACHING MONEY SCHEMES OF THE RUSSIAN MOB.

it begins i guess with prohibition, organized crime became organized from prohibition. small wars followed big wars, things got sorted out, guys like meyer lansky, lucky luciano and frank costello, they started to put together this THING OF OURS. Territories were divided up, a commission was set up, rules were made and broken. Vegas was discovered in the 30's and soon the Chicago outfit with some mid west guys banked bugsey seigel and the rest in history. World war 2 broke out and ended thus giving the mob a whole new venue with the unions, vegas, hollywood, and now DRUGS.

I guess you cannot talk about organized crime,  the mob, unless you get into this so here goes: we all know frank costello, well, his partner in the mob and i bootlegging was none other than Joe Kennedy. ole man joe goes to the mob, namely sam giancana of chigago to get his son jack elected. twice the mob assisted, once in west virginiia getting the nomination and then during the election delivering vital areas. FACT. Course we learn that jack makes his brother bobby attorney general and together they go after the mob which got them elected.AT THIS TIME WE ALSO GOT THE MOB KICKED OUT OF CUBA BY CASTRO, WORKIN WITH CHRISTIANS IN ACTION TO WACK THE BEARD (CASTRO). WE GOT THE CIA MAD AT KENNEDY FOR THE BAY OF PIGS FIASCO, KENNEDY IS ABOUT TO ARRANGE A TOP SECRET COUP IN CUBA WHICH WOULD LEAVE NO ROOM FOR THE MAFIAS RETURN, BOBBY IS ALSO CRUCIFYING THE UNIONS AND J. HOFFA TO A POINT OF ILLEGAL HARRASMENT. BOBBYALSO LITTERALLY HAS MAFIA BOSS OF NEW ORLEANS CARLOS MARCELLO BUNDLED UP AND DROPPED OFF IN A JUNGLE AIRSTRIP IN CENTRAL AMERICA. you cannot do all this with recriminations.

after the assasination of jfk, and bobby, and the removal of j. edgar hoover from the fbi, THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION began an investigation of organized crime for the first time.

IT WAS SAID THAT J EDGAR DIDN'T WANT HIS AGENTS TAINTED BY ORGANIZED CRIME THUS HE DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE MAFIA. in truth, since the late 30's meyer lansky held the incriminating photos of j. edgar and his male lover in many compromising positions, a meeting was had, and an agreement was made with meyer and j edgar that they would lay off each other.

SEEMS DURING WW2, WHEN J EDGAR HAD A TURF WAR WITH THE OSS AND WILD BILL DONOVAN,  j edgar and his gray suits tried and failed to find anything compromising on medal of honor winner donovan, however, the oss did succeed and get their own photo evidence of j edgars homosexual lifestyle.

uh, backtracking a little, lets see, who shot kennedy? i dunno, but sam had to have marilyn the blonde wacked, chicago guys stuck an enema up her butt, johnnie roselli, ends up shootin sam in sams basement? maybe. johnnie roselli, who was the go between guy cia-mob/chicago, santo trafficanti in miami, meyer, carlos marcello in new orleans, knew all the players-he hadda go, went swimmin  off florida in a cement drum.

it took the kennedy assasination and the removal of hoover-uh, forgot, hoover had photos and film of jack, bobby, marilyn and others..

so as long as the kennedys were alive, hoover was a threat to them.

and then there were five families in new york, bonanno, luchese, columbo, gambino, genovese

still jumpin around on how to start this. Organized crime, mafia, grew after prohibitiion taught them to get along and work together and negotiate and organize, drugs and the quick and enormous amounts of cash was a catalyst. after the war the unions gave the mob a war chest to buy into such legal enterprises such as vegas, the garment industry in nyc, the cement industry in nyc, most of hollywood (AND THERE WAS A BAN ON INVESTIGATIONS RE; HOLLYWOOD AND THE BOYZ FOR A LONE TIME).

it was decreed by the commision that dealing drugs was a death sentence for a made man.  THE OLD MUSTACHE PETES WERE AFRAID OF THE 20-LIFE SENTENCES ABLE TO BE HANDED DOWN. The younger men were disenchanted with the old time bosses. they made all the money, and the young guys did the time with little or no compensation.  The old guys were not giving out any buttons any more. Small wars became big quickly. CRAZY JOEY GALLO, AFTER GETTIN OUT OF THE CAN, WANTED HIS PIECE OF THE ACTION AND CHALLENGED THE COMMISSION. GALLO,  GALLO'S NARCOTICS CONNECTIONS AND THE BLACK  CONNECTIONS HE HAD MADE INTHE JOINT, the hit on joe columbo by a black ex con named jerome johnson, i think, was tied to gallo. CRAZY JOEY GOT HIS AT UMBERTO 'S CLAM HOUSE IN LITTLE ITALY ON APRIL 7.72.

THE BONANO FAMILY WAS OUTCAST BY THE OTHER FAMILIES DUE TO THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE NARCOTICS TRADE. when carmine galante, the head of the bonano's during the early 70's got out of prison, alot of people dreaded his return. he was the most dreaded mobster in new york since the passing of carlo gambino in  oct. 76. His involvement in narcotics turned the other bosses  against him and in july of 79 at john and marys in williamsburg brooklyn, galante was hit by two assassins who had entered the read courtyard armed with a shotgun and sawed off rifle. His two body guards, two zips i had the displeasure of knowing put the finishing touches into their boss in return for taking over the narcotics trade quietly. The american bosses could not expect to be held responsible for what the sicialian mob guys did. they were not under the no narcotics dealing rule. Yeah, 2 disco dudes with gold chains, flash cars, baldo amato and ceasare something or other. I think baldo disappeared altogether and ceasare was found chainsawed in half in a 55 gal drum. NICE GUYS HUH?

On the Gambino family side of business, when carlo gambino, the boss of bosses passes in oct of 76, he passes the mantel of rule to his brother in law PAUL CASTELLANO.  big paulie, now ruled the largest and most wealthy and powerful mafia family in new york. Paulie, who lived in a huge place called the WHITE HOUSE on todt hill in staten island and was a millionaire many times over and a successful legitimate business man. Paul tended to favor more white collar crime that the blue collar muggings and hijackings going on in some parts of his family.  it was a stated fact that paul considered narcotics dealing with his family a death sentence, though he never seemed to question the large envelopes of tribute paid regularly, paul wanted no part of the fbi and dea's rico laws.

The police surgeon handling my case was a real great guy, became the head honcho for awhile, didn't push me onto restricted or limited duty, he let me out of the house 24/7. told me to keep up physical therapy, and he would be in touch.

Jack had visited me often after the accident, he was the person to be notified just in case , listed on my uf10 card, and was there alot and took care of me. Gino showed up alot also and talk about oil and vinegar. Here, the best two friends i have in the whole world, they live at the extreme ends of the spectrum from each other, truly, there was no love lost here. They knew of each other and had met at my kids births and christenings and such.

'YOU KNOW I GO FROM RAGS TO RICHES, IF YOU WOULD ONLY SAY YOU CARE......" sang tony bennett.

GINO WAS COOKIN SAUSAGE WITH PEPPERS AND ONION ON THE SMALL DECK IN THE BACK OF THE  APARTMENT I HAD, JACK HAD SHOWN UP AND WE SAT DOWN IN MY KITCHEN AND WENT THRU PROBABLY A GALLON OF DAGO RED, GINO SWITCHED TO SCOTCH, I TALKED TO THE CLOSEST FRIENDS IN MY LIFE. I WAS EITHER GONNA QUIT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT(by this time, i had seen an awful lot, the layoffs, back in uniform, the accident, guys killed, my divorce was imminent with two kids to support) or i had to make a move or be ready when opportunity struck..IF I STAYED A COP..THINGS HADDA CHANGE.. i wanted the gold shield, gray sharkshin suit, Homocide Unit or Intelligence, to get there,I HAD TO DO SOMETHING, it couldn't just be collars, I HAD THEM UP THE YINGYANG, I wanted to become a wise guy if i could.  OCCB-organized crime. FIRST RULE IS YA GOTTA HELP YOURSELF RITE?, what did i need to do to prepare, what would it take, I THOUGHT BACK TO THE CONVERSATION JACK AND I HAD AWHILE BACK WHEN HE WAS PREPPING ME FOR THE FRANKIE CASE.  You do not enlist into organized crime,  there is no human resources, no want ads, no applications. MOST WISE GUYS ARE BROUGHT UP INTO THE LIFE,FAMILY, NEIGHBORS, neighborhood. It was all an education and the old guys watched the youngs grow up and seperated their chosen from the herd.  The only other way to become a member is to be asked by a made guy to first work as an associate, all the time doing his biding and the bosses, and earning and kicking up a percentage up stairs. IF YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO DO WORK, OR EARN AND KICK UP -UPSTAIRS, WHAT THE F-- GOOD ARE YA?>? get outta here before ya get slapped. or worse. THEY WILL EAT YOU FOR SUPPER IF THEY FEEL THEY CAN TAKE WHAT IS YOURS AND GET AWAY WITH IT. the trick, it seems, was make the long term financial rewards worth your being around, funny, the more money ya brought in the funnier my jokes were. We spent one entire weekend holed up in my apartment.  Sunday nite when my friends left, it was done.  I had made a life changing decision,

man,  i do not know how guys like levine, pistone, others, undercovers who have written about stuff, something you cannot write about, things you cannot talk about, things you cannot say, EVER.  it reminds me of a 60 minutes show on a secret document release and all you see is a paper with 96% of the words blacked out. Kinda hard to put the rest together, i am still not sure this is worth the effort or how far i will take this.

THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE DEAD AND ALIVE WHO CAN BE AFFECTED BY WHAT YOU SAY AND WRITE. I TRY TO REMEMBER THAT.

Pen it all out, Mikie. Don't do it here. It'll get you jammed up or worse. Change a few names, get an alias, and write a book. You've got the start of a great story that will fiil a book. Put it all down and send it to an editor. You'll do well. Just watch your back and keep the important stuff close to the vest.

okay, i think i got i together,

ya see, when i walked out of my apartment that sunday nite with jack and gino-

we walked out onto the beach on rockaway-

YO MIKIE-

FROM NOW ON MUTHA------

THIS WAS HOW WE TRIED TO PLAY THE WHOLE SYSTEM.

gino, when ever he paid his tribute, kicked his share upstairs, paid off, in HUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS.

when ever gino's boss would comment on the nice crisp new hundred dollar  bills he wal always paid in/////////

gino would say

i get them from a frend

in any organized crime venture, changing small bills into large in worth5 pts and up.

gino always paid in hundred dollar bills./ i know this has triggered some peoples thinking)

mikie borrowed 5 large from sammy black - paid him back one week  in hundreds

mikie bought a truck from B. paid 10g in hundreds

mikie lost 5 g bet on pro fight-

paid in hundred dollar bills

what we had conncocted was this-

organized crime ran on money, lots and lots of money,.1's.5's,10's,20's......

numbers, dope, broads, gamblings, CASH CASH CASH.......

YO GINO, WHERE YO GET THESE HUNDREDS ALL TH E TIME, YOU AND YOUSE FRIEND MIKIE......

YOUSE GUYS ALLWAYS PAYS INHUNDREDS....

HOW COMES

IS MIKIES YOUR GUYS FOR THE LARGE??

YO GINO, WHERE DOES MIKIE  GO IN THE WINTER ALL THE TIME..  HE REALLY LIKE THE SNOW??

what we had  devised was this. gino always paid in cash 100's.  everyone always asked him where he got the 100's from and he would say he had a guy and left it at that./

as years went on and i entered into the picture, it was easy for gino to implicate me as his sourse for the large bills.

jack, gino, and i used every legal and illegal(kinda) sourse to trade in  small bills for large so when in was appropriate, mikie would bet 10g on a game in hundreds. buy a truck for a business partnership with another family member-pay in hundreds, loans-in an out pay the vig in hundreds.

how valuable do you think you may be to organized crime if you seem to have a knack to transfer small bills to large with the notice ot the govt?

you are now a commodity.

NOW  YOU ARE A VALUABLE COMMODITY!!

any time, anywheres, i feel heat??

i am a golden goose.

NO ONE F-----S WITH THE GOLDEN GOOSE GOT IT!!

ONE PROBLEMO......

JACKIE THE NOSE WANTS A 100G IN HUNDREDS.

CARMINE NEEDS TWO SUIT CASES NEXT WEEK. (50g PER CASE)

b says if he hears of me an gino cashin out and not payin his gratuity, ouch>>

we, me gino, jack, the da's office, the feds, all needed one thing-ORDER.

WHAT WE STARTED SNOWBALLED-NO PUN INTENDED-GREW INTO A FIRESTORM----EVERYONE WANTED CASH EXCHANGED-THE DRUG TRADES DURING THE SAME PERIOD WAS W ASHING ALL THE CASH IN AMERICA. I WILL BET AT A TIME THAT ONE IN EVERY 3 20'S HAD TRACES OF NARCOTICS ON THE BILL.

I HAD FOUND A SOURCE FOR LARGE AMOUNTS OF BILLS AND A WAY TO EXCHANGE MONIES  SO AS TO ENTICE ORGANIZED CRIME .

remember from some of my earlier ramblings, organized crime does not take applications, they take their time, watching the young ones growing up in the neighborhoods, they would recruit from the young borgatas, the youth gangs, who would do the wise guys biddings from time to time.

if you want in, you gotta find a way for them to ask you in,

we tried to make it so they could not rip me off because of gino and b

that i was protected

this did not happen overnite--

timeline from inception of plan t hat fateful weekend in rockaway in my apt with gino and jack till this really got going way was 4 years,  during which time i did a nice tour with STINSONS RAIDERS IN THE 77TH PRECINCT after recovering from the car crash. a small anti crime tour, one year as a white shield det. with 77PIU.

by this time in my life i think i had lost 9 friends and acquaintances KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY, 2 MORE TO SUICIDE, A VAST NUMBER MORE INJURED AND RETIRED ON MEDICAL PENSION,

the 10 COMMANDMENTS OF LA COSA NOSTRA-

members must be full blooded italians where families can be traced back to the old country

members must respect those appointed above them. (no matter what one may think of a guy, if he gets upped to skipper or boss, he must be respected.

no one can represent themself to another friend as a made guy,  this introduction must be made by a third party, a made guy known to both. usual intro when-this is a friend of our(a made guy) or this is a friend of mine (not a member of la cosa nostra) even associates were considered a friend of mine.

no messing around with another members wife or family

do not steal from another friend of ours or another family

honor thy wife

always be available to cosa nostra, your mafia family comes before all else, 24/7. even if your mother is on her death bed and you are called, you must come immediately

do not be seen with the police

always tell the truth when questioned by your skipper of boss. you gotta tell what you are doing and how much you are making, this is known as going on the record

members must have no relatives or friends of the police, no behaving badly and good moral values

i have definately been out in the mountains a little too long i think.  One of my connections to the real world is the internet, i dont have a home phone number, i use paid cell phones, post office boxes, no cable or satellite and have moved i think 9 times in the last 11 years or so. I use the annonymity of the internet for contacts with people and news and movies and of course DISCO music. I was just this  morning listening to some music via the internet and there are a list of suggested music and videos etc listed along side the page i am on on youtube. I see a listing and pic for a show from hbo called SUGARTIME. i definately would suggest watching for free on youtube. I was intrigued by the old 50's cars depicted in the photo and decided to give the film a try. When i click on the video  up comes SAM GIANCANNA on the stream, a movie about one and a half hours long on sam g and his relationship with phyllis macguire, one of the macguire sisters. (my mom loved them.) Now, in my life, there are things you do not say or talk about.  I have stated that in the past that in my writings there are things which can not be discussed or stated as fact. maybe i would throw in an inuendo at times.  if you have read this posting in its entirety, in the 3rd posting which starts (to understand the war against organized crime) about three quarters down the post, i speak of the assasination of sam giancanna, shot in the basement of his home. The police and fbi have never charged anyone with that crime. It is known in organized crime circles that tony a. gave the contract to johnny roselli who was a close friend and associate to sam g. so i had hinted to such in my writing.

Here on the show i watch this morning, the movie actually shows tony a. hint to johnny roselli to do the deed to sam g and the the movie actually shows roselli shoot sam g. in the back of the head. I and other undercover officers like me are living covert lives, me, a thousand miles from anywhere, and the truths are being played out on the movie screen and wise guys, murderers many times over, have made deals with the govt and are out on the streets, making movies of their own, starring in films re; organized crime. I saw a movie awhile back where a gofer in a wiseguy social club is actually a mad killer i will call father frank. This maddog killer is not only a free man but has played multiple roles in films. Another guy, i am sure he is still mad that i took his girlfriend away to the poconos for a weekend, is on quite a few mob documentaries of the gambino crew which had a base of operation in the famous GEMINI LOUNGE where i was installed in an apartment on kings highway just 2 blocks away and made it one of my operating bases also.

Where am i going with all this? Some mob bosses are spending life plus in jail, most of couse deserved their sentences, but to see the govt change the rules as they go, you will see one such rule in the movie sugartime, how about when john gotti was denied his choice of council. How about denying anthony (gaspipe) casso his right to testify because it would have harmed the governments chances in other trials had casso been able to prove govt witnesses had lied and their testimonys were tainted? I really dont fear the reprisal of wiseguys half as much as i do an opportunist prosecutor. There is a statement which i shall research and post here in the future made by a distinguished organized crime detective, please watch for this addition and also please enjoy the movie SUGARTIME.

This a statement i promised to post in my last writing.  It is taken from a film posted on youtube from a BBC series Crime Inc, The episode title is "THE OLD MOB AND NEW".

A highly regarded organized crime undercover detective named John Donohue is asked by a BBC reporter; "you seem to have attributed to the Mafia such power it seems that America, the whole of American society is really in its grip."

Answers this undercover detective; "You give me a telephone book, and give me a little time and drop me in any american town and i'll show you what they're into".

Retired Detective Donohue continues,"....let me put it this way, until i seen them walk into a number of State Legislatures and the Congress of the United States and I see them locking up people on the floors of these hallowed bodies, I don't believe there is a serious effort to stop Organized Crime, thats how pervasive it is". And, they will have to go into certain churches and arrest certain church people and everything else,  thats how pervasive organized crime is.  Its ingrained, its part of our institution. I dont think we can ever get it out.

All i can add to this is- AMEN.

to all my readers and especially to marlyb, in answer to your question as to real estate diversification by organized crime. Here is one example that i know of during my time.  There was a gambling city located in one state and about a one and a half hour drive you crossed a bridge and entered another adjoining state which had no legalized gambling but a depressed waterfront and shoreline extending north and south of the bridge for a few miles.  Organized crime took some of the skim from the casino and other associated operations and bought up the land in the adjoining state in the depressed area.  Next they corrupted certain officials and legalized gambling was introduced into legislation and after a few years, law was passed and of course certain government officials okayed tax incentives and other licensing and legal deals to get the depressed area funding and development assistance and the mob moved into a new state, had an in with the new casinos and associated businesses, industry and trade unions etc and scored multi million dollars. Everyone made money, all the wise guys and corrupt officials that is.

the mob has infiltrated every aspect of society like a spider web or an octopus. this we know. prison walls only contain the body, yet the orders that set things in motion is still decided and ordered from within those walls. prisons contain members of every race and every gang and when there is money to be made and protection to be had, these members who may despise each other on the street form an alliance with each other because there is money o be made and lives to protect. it would never been possible for organized crime to become as powerful as it did without joining forces. meyer lansky and many before him (rothstein, shapiro, bernstein) helped in all aspects procurring  alliances in politics, restauant businesses, construction companies, hollywood etc...

prison gangs befriend gangs working for the cartels. no way you say ? someone has to get the drugs out of the country, secure their path and make sure it is secured with the buyer. when protests were taking place in the 70's, unions hired thugs to break em up only now, instead of thugs with bats the thugs are wearing white shirts and carrying blackberrys. the job still gets taken care of.

guiliani did a remarkable job trying to eradicate the mob which is why i thought he would have been "taken" care of long ago. every city has someone who knows someone or did work for someone even if you live in a city with dirt roads or only one deli.

by the way - another great book with some interesting characters is "Murder Machine" (Gemini Lounge)
