No longer dispatching! (update!!)

Posted about 3 years ago After nearly 13 years of sitting in dispatch, telling cops and hosers where to go, I have left the communications gig. Faced with transferring to the county 911 center in a consolidation that I felt and now see as ill-prepared and poorly thought out, I chose to interview for the new "Police Assistant" position at our PD. Well, I got it and now nearly three months into the new job I am very glad I got it. While many (especially me lol) call it the Department B!^(#, I have actually had a bunch of the cops thank me for the job I do. So what do I do? Well every day is different and that is a huge plus, I pull photos and video for court, fleet maintenance and inspections, radar maintenance and installs, some records duties, our new peddler license and just about anything else they can find for me. While I miss midnights and dispatching, having a a set schedule (Tu-Sa) instead of the old 6 on 2 off is soooo nice. |

| Posted over 1 year ago I know this is an older post, but congrats! Dispatching is one of the hardest jobs in a police department, especially if you really care about your officers. I spent 10 years in the 2nd largest department in the State of Michigan and while I love my work, it was very frustrating to have to send guys and gals into dangerous situations. Stress was through the roof. So, I made the jump, worked nights, academy and college during the day and finally went on the street, although with a different department. Best decision I ever made.
Glad you are and hopefully still are enjoying your new position. Without people to perform those tasks an officer would spend way too much time inside doing that work. |

| Posted over 1 year ago Update: "Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in!" LOL! I am now dispatching on a part time basis. With my kids getting older (19,17,12) I could use the money and besides, for thos of you who have done it and love it you know how it gets in your blood. What's cool is I usually work a few days, about 4 hours at a time. I walk in and it's like Norm on Cheers, everyone goes "Daaave!" I sit down and do my job and with only being part time I avoid any in house politics. I know, schocking that a dispatch center may have those! |
