Good Topic Sarge, and SGT405, excellent way to put it.

I thnik there is a word that has been tossed in, but was left out of the Original Post. Guts! I guess it goes hand in hand with Courage and discipline. Of course, we all know that these few words are not the only words that form the backbone of LE, but are a few of the better ones.

Courage: I fight what you fear and yes I fear it also but with my PerveranceKnowledge, and the ability to adapt to all tactics and challenges I can overcome all things. Also with my  Faith and Integrity I know that I will do the right thing at the right time for the right reasons.

But above all I believe that as a Law Enforcement Officer you must have Respect, respect for others, for your family and friends, also for your fellow Officers and yourself. But above all you must have respect for your God. Without respect you are nothing. Respect is gained not given. You earn it by the blood and tears that you shed, the hard times and the good times. You must respect what others have done before you and what others will do after you are gone.

I respect the citizens on the street as they pay the taxes that pay my wage. I show respect to the offenders and also demand the respect from them when they try and demean me. You might not like me but you will respect the Badge I wear on my chest. It might get worn but this piece of metal will never be tarnished by my actions or deeds. Why is this because I have the greatest job on the face of the earth. This Career that we have chosen is a limited membership only club and I am proud to call all of you my Brothers and Sisters. We are the Thin Blue line that protects the home front. We are called LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.

Bad stuff happens to good people, handle it and overcome.
My motto for life:
Let go and let GOD,
Only HE can control everything.

compassion and empathy are missing here............ when asked why someone became a LEO, the #1 answer is always "to help people". Well, that comes down to "Do to others what you would have them do to you". I think most of us forget this, I know I do

I have lived my life on MY terms, no one elses. I have not succumbed to peer pressure. I have always taken responsibility for my actions. I have never blamed anyone else for them. My name is sacred to me. My words and actions are what make my name honorable. They follow my name for eternity. My name is how I am recalled and how I will be remembered. They are forever intertwined.  I will do nothing to dishonor my name. I never have, I never will. I believe in Honor, Duty, Loyalty, Integrity, Honesty and the Courage to fight for all of them throughout my life.  I will do nothing to tarnish my name, my family, my community, my country, MY BADGE!

Well said.

Read somewhere in tenets of bushido that modesty and fine manners are The Way of the Sword.  What was it...If grace is economy of movement, then fine manners means power in repose.  Power in repose.

Bump SGT405.  Reminds me of back when I struck out on my own at 17 moving 1600 miles from home. My dad told me my good name was all I had and that it meant something, especially where I was going (his hometown in Texas, Texans y'all know what I'm talkin bout). That if I messed it up I could never get it back. I have held that value close and sacred...

"Integrity"

It's something you have, or you don't

Once you loose it you can not get it back

Everything a LEO or Non LEO does should reflect Integrity.

I will always do the right thing for the right reasons

Big Bump my Brother. You have said it very well, thank you. These are the very same values that I have tried to teach to my two sons and so far, they have done me very proud. Neither wears a badge even though one was accepted at FHP but they still have these same values in life. I am also thankful in some ways that they did not follow my path in LE simply because to the way LE is treated now.

As the product of a blossoming Law Enforcement Career starting in 1975 (long befor some here were born) , I was blessed to have a "Former" Marine for a Chief (Anthony Sgariglia) . Back in those days the Police were called "PIG's". The Chief focused on that and had a sign made up that he proudly displayed so you could not miss it in the Stations Lobby . "P"= Pride / "I"= Integrity / "G"= Guts . with a picture of a pig and a badge. His philosophy was real simple , either live up to that standard or turn in your badge !

We may not have had all the bells and whistles that modern Police Work has evolved to at this stage , but if you can live up to those beliefs as a Law Enforcement Officer , "YOUR DA MAN"..(or "WOMAN")

Glory earned on the field of battle , can never be taken away , you take it with you to the grave. Quote by General George Armstrong Custer

Outstanding topic !!!!

To me, it is not just any one of these words, IT IS ALL OF THEM.  You put them together and you have a police officer or a soldier or a .....  person,  about who you can say  good things and have good thoughts.  Someone you can trust.

COURAGE.  To me there are two kinds of courage.  The physical courage, eg, running into the burning building or stepping in front of the President when some nut has a gun and is going to shoot.  The second is moral courage, one that might be harder to do and live with the consequences/fallout, etc.   Telling another officer your not lying for him,  refusing to go along to get along, not stealing money from a drug dealers stash.  You get the idea.

what is that verbal judo line.... empathize don't sympathize?

What was just posted was probably a poor attempt at humor, wit, or sarcasm. It;s called breakin balls, get used to it.

I'm not an LEO yet but I am former active duty Navy. Here is my perspective. First I will not take credit where its not due so any idea another had I will put there screenname in ( example).

OKAY:

COURAGE: I feel as an LEO you would need alot of it. To make it through the day and follow your dreams.

VIGILANCE:  I feel is nessary as well to have what I call attention to detail. Watchful and alert.

ADAPTABILITY: Is also a good thing to have every day is different and you never know where you might go or do. To be prepared for  anything                             and everything.

KNOWLEDGE: I feel is not just common sense, but to know your job inside and out and to excel at it everyday and to put your all into doing      your   job right.

PERSEVERANCE: Is the drive to get the job done no matter what hurdles you run into to have the drive to jump that hurdle and get the job done.

DISCIPLINE: I feel is needed to be an LEO. To have the self-control to keep yourself in line and follow code when being disrespected on a daily basis.

REPECT: (Earlier brought up by GEA212) Is also important in my non-LEO eyes. To show respect to others whether it be a witness, your fellow co-workers or to show respect to people who constantly disrespect you.

INTEGRITY:(Earlier discussed by MN108) Important as well agreeing with the reasons MN108 discussed which was well said. Bump

HONOR: Is important in many ways I feel to be honest with yourself and others, honoring the fallen are just two examples.

One I didnt see and would like to add. Sorry to anyone that did post this and I just failed to see.

COMMITMENT: To be able to stick it out to the end. No matter the challenges and changes and trials.

I feel all play a role in an LEO career I know in my Navy career i have seen many ugly things that hurt deep in my heart. I feel LEO'sdont have it that much easier.  This I just my Non-LEO opinion feel free to correct me if im wrong or missed something.

I agree wholeheartedly with an addition. Doing the whats right even when no one else is around to notice.

Bump to that Ross. I tell the kids I deal with that you have one thing that you come into this life with and that is your integrity. How you treat it is up to each person. Try to keep it unsullied and true to oneself. Good one
