Just want to clear something up before I decide to jump into one degree or another. I’ve heard/read that attaining a Business Degree in Business Management will get you through the ranks quicker and that it is a better degree to have over Criminal Justice. Personally, I think if you try to get the degree that moves you up quicker you may not be going into LE for the right reasons. Granted, most want to move up the ladder but for the right reasons and the right way. So, Criminal Justice route OR Business Management?

Every department may have their preference. When I look at candidates for hire/promotion, if they have a "person" oriented degree, it may tip the scales, everything else being equal. I mean is Police work is "People Management".

CJ jobs don't produce widgets, so the "bottom line" is everyone going home at night. That part of management you could probably throw out.

Management, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, etc. would be given the nod over, say, an Early French Art and Literature major.

If you want to go federal, you should also look into a minor in Farsi.
