Just wondering what kind of schedules does everyone work here? We currently work 10 hour shifts and 4 days on and 4 days off.

San Diego Sheriff's Patrol & Jail deputies work a 12/5 schedule: 5 days on and 5 days off, 2 days on and 2 days off. On your “on days,” you work 12.5 hour days.

It sounds complicated but it’s not so bad after you have been exposed to it. There is a chart that explains it, along with other hiring information at: http://www.joinsdsheriff.net/careers_deputydetcts.html

My patrol guys work 4/10's and absolutely love them. They are even willing to give things up to keep them. You figure with that shift, you work 4 days a week, 16 days a month or about 208 days a year (4 days a week x 52 weeks a year) as opposed to 260 (5 days a week x 52 weeks a year) then take out vacation days, training days, personal days... and it is pretty nice.
I like it because it gives us overlapping coverage, they still work 40 hours a week and because of the manning, allows us to do extra things with patrol. Specialty jobs and non-union work 5/8's just because of their jobs.

We work so many different shifts in CBP that it makes your head swim. No continuity or set pattern to life is my norm. In the summer times, we work multiple 16 hour shifts in a row. Mind you, the second shift is double time, but it wears on a person physically and mentally. Lots of new guys get worn out and abused by the OT and end up quitting.

When I was with the San Diego SO, I worked M-F 0600-1400, and it was the best shift a person could ever ask for. I was Court Services, and we worked the court hours.

We work 4 10-hour shifts with 3 days off. The unit I work in, you either work Sunday - Wednesday or Wednesday - Saturday, so that everyone has one of the weekend days off, which is pretty nice. I've worked several different schedules, and for me, the 4/10 is best. There are some other good ones, but I reccomend staying with something that gets you at least 3 days off. 5/8s are the worst as far as I'm concerned.

6 eight hour days in row and two off. Plus I work a month on 2nd watch, next month is on 3rd watch and next month is a flip-flop of both.

Wow... I stand corrected - your schedule is worse than 5/8's CPD...

As of right now, 12 hr shifts...two days on/two days off, with every other weekend (Fri-Sun) off. My department is currently looking at switching over to 10 hr shifts, but is going to have to reassign other personnel to make it work. As it stands, we'll have to go from 2 shifts to 3 shifts and we don't have the people to form the third shift, on patrol.

I am working, Mike. Unlike some dispatchers, I can do more than one thing at a time.

I have worked pretty much all kinds but the one I loved the most was 2 days, 2 mids, and 2 eves and then 80 hrs off. They were all 8 hr shifts that in reality were always more than that. No such thing as overtime either. Mostly it was rotating shifts each month and working 6, off two 8 hr shifts. When assigned to motors it was the very best, Mon-Friday from 8am to 4 pm. That I loved!

By the way Jason, Congrats on your well deserved promotion. I don't doubt there is no better leader there than you!
