Posted almost 3 years ago I am still in high school and my dream is to be a Kentucky State Trooper. I have always wanted to join the military i'm thinking Army MP i know MP will not help me any more than any other MOS. you have to be 21 so i was thing do 4 years in Army then join Kentucky State Police at 22 but would they even hire me i know i would meet the requirements but i am thinking in the real world it's not that easy. College would probably look alot better, and they would probably be more inclined to hire me with a degree than a few years military service. from what i hear there is alot of competition. Everyone here has alot of experience and i would appreciate all the feedback. which would help me get my dream career any suggestions THANK YOU!! |

| Posted almost 3 years ago I have been with the KSP for 10 years now. I will be happy to speak with you if you want. Right now, numbers are low, and they will only take a class a year of about 60 cadets. If you want to join the Army, then that would be great. Get you college while there as well. I would not just make it a make it ir break it thing for the KSP. There are several great Police Jobs out there. I went to college, worked as a Deputy while testing for the KSP. Get all the education you can, no matter what. Get that Military time in too while you are young and it helps with retirement too. If you wait till you get in, the retirement for the KSP went to 27 years now. If you get 3-4 years in with the Army, thats time off the 27 years with the KSP. Listen here as well, there is other LEO jobs out there. The KSP is not the omly one, and I understand wanting that job, but don't limit your self, its not worth the time if you can get started early else where while you test for us. Keep every option open for you, do everything you can in your favor. College, Army and test for us, and look at other jobs while you test for us is the way to go. Like I said, I was in college, working full time as a Deputy until I got in the KSP. I don't regret nothing, and I learned a lot and got a great jump on my training before I got in the KSP. Just PM me if you wish, I will help how ever I can. Just don't throw everything down on the KSP, because it might take years to get in. I saw several Troopers that it took 5-7 times to test to get in. We have one of the hardest testings to get through, and its no walk in the park. I saw several people that just got out of the Military that could not get in. there is no for sure with us, I don;t care what you do, and even if you get in the Academy, don;t mean you will stay the whole 23 weeks. You can get hurt, or fail, or just might not want it when you get there, you never know. Just pray on the matter, and learn all you can about us and other LEO jobs. There are so many great jobs out there, like all the new Federal Prisons, KVE, Local and City, Fish and Wildlife. Look at them all, and also don't over look the option of a Military retirement, either. There are Troopers still active in the Army..Contact me if you have any questions. I love each day like its my last! Why do we are have to be so serious? |

Good morning, I know your post was about 4 months ago, I was and NCO in the Army, I have any advice it would be to make sure your grades are great in school have fun as a kid. And if you decided to join any branch of the military make sure up pick a MOS that has a civilian counterpart .Jobs are hard to come by here in the civilian sector and there are a lot of police departments that require collage , so if you go in to the military make sure you get a bonus collage fun , and do your best at what ever you do .And yes it depends on were you would be stationed as to how many collage classes you can take or accomplish who knows you may even like being in the military . |

Something I always tell the "i want to be a cop" crowd, especially those in the military...research the hell out of this line of work, because there are many ways to be a cop. So many folks, especially in the military, are fixated on one agency and doing one job and never seem to see the bigger picture AND I think it has to do with folks thinking you can "join" a police agency the same way they "joined" the military. |

True, plus we are testing for the class next MAY 2011. We got a class done. KVE, CVE what ever still is under the State Police now too, why don't we all just become the KSP and let the KVE, CVE whatever they want to be called be like the Troopers and let them update the whatever needed stuff they need to be a Trooper, because they are Police to me just beside road and truck enforement. I know Frankfort might not agree with me, but they are State Police because they are under our control now. There is also many other Police Jobs out there other than KSP, trust me. Keep your mind open, and don't just try for us, because there is a 88.97% chance you will not make it with us no matter who you are. We seem to let a lot of great police officers fade to other jobs and they are great officers there, make more money and are happy with thenew found job opp.
Just a thought, I have been there 11 yrs, and 1 yr as a Deputy and really the Deputy job was great, I was happy, just no money in that area... I love each day like its my last! Why do we are have to be so serious? |

| Posted over 2 years ago The KVE (CVE) whatever they wanna be called, does a lot of Police work in my area. They answer some domestics and assist in serving warrants and etc. I agree they should be updated to full blown Troopers. We have a lot of great guys in our area Eddie Melton and Oria Michael Smith just to name a couple. Smith was just recently promoted to SGT. I also agree with you on the Deputy statement..Our deputies make $10 an hour...it's not even enough to live on. |
