I was just wondering where most of you LEO's learned your espanol? I am currently doing rosetta stone but that program does not use ANY slang. Am I going to have to wait to get on the job and just use it everyday? Anyone use quickcards? Let me know, I would really appriciate it.

I don't really speak Spanish. I know a little bit, but you'll begin to realize that the more people That "Speak no english" tend to learn real quick when you mention Jail.

A lot of officers have used Rosetta Stone successfully and are more prepared for it, but when it comes to slang; there's nothing better than learning from a Spanish speaking officer or a friendly abuela.  As for learning the language on my own time, flash cards did the trick for me.  Buenas suerte amigo.

I have found that knowing and speaking Spanish is one thing and understanding what the h*** they are saying is another. You will learn more in the streets I think. There is no substitute for a 1 on 1 conversation. Just remember the phrase "por favor hablas muy lentamante". This will help slow them down a bit. Otherwise, I'm lost.

I agree, you have probably discovered, as i have, that even the ones who act as if they don't know english sure understand the word "jail".

Do they sometimes pretend not to know English, then you say "jail" and suddenly they know more English than they thought?

Whoa, opened a can of worms here (lol)

Like so many have already responded, I have no intent on learning a foreign language in my birth country. if they "No habla", they can go back to their country of origin until they learn the language (doesn't matter what language is their native tongue). There's been millions (literally) of foreign born nationals that have come to the US legally to find a better way of life. The vast majority of those learned the English language and at least attempt to try to communicate.

AEarp8404, have you ever been to a foreign country? If not, go to another country (other than Canada) and walk into a store there. Speak nothing but English and see how far you get.

Two words:  illegal immigration.

Our southern border is, on average, monitored at best.  Sure, we have some areas under operational control, but others are the wild west.  The criminals crossing our border do NOT speak English and they are here to commit a crime.  Whether they're looking for a better life or have more nefarious plans in mind is 10:1 but they are crossing; and many are living in your cities.  They drink & drive, assault, murder, rape, molest, sell narcotics and steal identies to live and work here.  They ARE criminals.  I would, based on my experience, wager that 1 out of 10 have committed a misdemeanor offense and 1 out of 100 a serious felony... and they're about 12 - 20 million living here.

Why do you want to speak Spanish?  Simply put, you want to know what little things like, "Cortelo!" means (Cut him!).  They will attempt to flee, they will attack you with rocks, knives, handguns or fists.  They don't want to go to jail and they don't want to see me (USBP [or ICE]).  Spanish may just save your life.

The USA is my country and English is our unofficial language of communication, but they don't care about that.  Spanish isn't just a job requirement for me... it's a way to know what the invader is saying when he is threatening me or attempting to pull a fast one.  That is why I need to know Spanish.

Then ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is the problem. Fix the first, the second is fixed automatically. My opinion of course.

AEarp8404,

My advice to you is, keep using the Rosetta stone method, because it will teach you the basic “business Spanish”. With that, you’ll have a huge start up edge.

When it comes to the slang… Well, things start to get a little more complicated… Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, as such, slang varies from Country to Country and even from region to region within a given Country, for example Puerto Rican slang is totally different from Mexican slang… Cuban slang is almost a total different language… (LOL) so my advice is: Go into the ghetto.

I don’t know the Agency or State you work on, but if you are in a big city, try to get assigned to the Spanish district within it.

When there, and using what you already know –or will know- from the Rosetta, try to absorb as much as you can…

You're right Sgt405, we need to fix the problem... but it's not exactly an overnight fix.  Until then LEOs will continue to be murdered by illegal aliens and be at a disadvantage if they don't speak Spanish.

It's not about whether or not one should HAVE to learn a foriegn language, it's about surviving an encouter when understanding a few Spanish words will make the difference.  Whether anyone likes it or not, knowing Spanish makes a person a more prepared LEO.

Then ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is the problem. Fix the first, the second is fixed automatically..

Easy to say, but not easy to accomplish; and "the second" is a requirement to fix the first.  This is the reality that we live in folks.  Deal with it, ignore it... really doesn't affect me much.  Just realize, not understanding Spanish when confronted with MS13, 18th Street, Zetas, etc; this puts YOU the LEO at a huge disadvantage.  Take a Spanish speaking LEO along for the ride with you, that way he can alert you when they start telling each other to kill you.

I might be a bit "in your face" with this, but I'm sick of seeing brothers gunned down, run down and beaten to death by these pukes.  When I see someone influencing the younger crowd NOT to learn Spanish... I'm sorry, but you're now helping someone risk their life unnecessarily.

People, if you do nothing else, learn a few life saving phrases.  Read the training articles that a few LEOs have written here on PL.  Take a basic Spanish course.

It is extremely wise on the part of any LEO to try to master a foreign language, unless you are planning to remain in uniform for the rest of your career…

I do not imply here that you will not get promoted or that you will not be part of a special detail unless you learn Spanish or any other foreign language, but your chances of doing so will be a lot greater if you do.

The most sophisticated details within large Agencies local or Federal  nclude foreign language speaking Officers.

That only makes sense, and it is especially important (and nice..!!!) when the officer doesn’t look (physically) like the native language speakers… (example: You look White, but speak Spanish, or you look Black, but speak Italian)

I had traveled all over the world, especially to Europe. Funny that all those assuming they don’t need to know anything other than English have been always sticking around me, even for a simple restaurant order…

AEarp8404, You are on the right path. I am a firm believer that if you come to America, you should get assimilated into mainstream culture and language, that you should learn the language and law of the land but:

The narrow-minded view that “this is America, you must know English here” does not apply here, because this is not about “them” it’s about you and your career…

I have an Associates Degree in Spanish.  I use it when it helps me(stress on the ME).

I have a proven method to see if male suspects speak english or not.  I put my nose in their face and say, "Do you kiss men?"  If they react like they understand, well, they understand.

Learned the majority of what little I know from high school - but I haven't practiced it, so it's all out the window now.
