A local man was attacked and seriously wounded with a knife at a Minot-area gas station Thursday morning.
Ward County Sheriff Vern Erck said the 51-year-old man apparently was slashed in the neck with a box-cutter type knife by Peter Victor Maki, of Kalispell, Mont., who was apprehended a short time later in the Granville area. The incident occurred around 8:10 Thursday morning at the Superpumper gas station, located at 7141 U.S. Highway 2 East, just east of Minot.
Maki has been charged with attempted murder.
A caller to Minot Central Dispatch reported an altercation between two customers and that one of the men was punched and cut in the neck.
"The victim said he didn't know (Maki) at all, (Maki) just said, 'I'm gonna kill you,'" Erck said.
Erck said Maki then drove off without removing the gas nozzle from his tank or paying for the fuel. The nozzle detached from an emergency coupling and fell into the lot. There was no gas or fire threat from the incident.
Erck said a McHenry County deputy stopped Maki's vehicle along with a pair of N.D. Highway Patrol officers near Granville after the vehicle information was broadcast.
Maki was also charged with fleeing police officers, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft of the gas he had put in his tank.
The victim was transported to Trinity Hospital via ambulance.
