TODAY, MY PARTNER AND I PROCESSED A SEXUAL ASSAULT SCENE INSIDE A RESIDENCE. THE ALLEGED LOCATION OF THE OFFENSE WAS IN THE FRONT LIVING ROOM AREA. THE PERP WAS 18YOA AND THE VICTIM WAS 13YOA. WE EXAMINED THE SCENE BY USING ALTERNATE LIGHT SOURCE (ALS), SPECIFICALLY LONGWAVE ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT (BLUE LIGHT) WITH AMBER GOGGLES - THE SEMEN FLUORESCES BRIGHTLY.

OF COURSE WE DISCOVERED THAT SEMEN IS NOT THE ONLY THING THAT FLUORESCES IN ALS. WE USED A SEMINAL FLUID PRESUMPTIVE TEST – THE ACID PHOSPHATASE TEST – SEMINAL FLUID DISCHAPS FROM SIRCHIE IN ONE SPOT AND THE TEST RESULTED NO REACTION. THERE WAS STILL QUITE A BIT OF THE TEST FLUID REMAINING & THE KIT ONLY COMES WITH ONE TEST PAPER WITH EACH KIT. SO, WE TORE OFF A CORNER OF A REGULAR PIECE OF WHITE PAPER TO TEST ANOTHER SPOT.

THE TEST ON THE OTHER SPOT HAD A POSITIVE REACTION FOR THE PRESENCE OF SEMEN (PAPER CHANGE FROM WHITE TO PURPLE COLOR). WE THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE “TEST STRIP” WAS PERHAPS JUST ANOTHER PLAIN PIECE OF PAPER BUT MORE ABSORBANT TO THE DISTILLED WATER & THE SUBSTANCE (SEMEN) BEING TESTED. TO OFFICIALLY DETERMINE THE PRESUMPTION OF SEMEN ON THIS SPOT, WE UTILIZED ANOTHER KIT, WHICH OF COURSE HAD THE SAME RESULT.

ONE TEST STRIP PER KIT DID NOT MAKE ANY SENSE; HOWEVER, NOW WE KNOW IF WE HAVE MULTIPLE AREAS TO TEST, WE COULD USE REGULAR PAPER FIRST BECAUSE THERE IS PLENTY OF TEST FLUID IN THE TEST TUBE TO DO AT LEAST FIVE TESTS.

I KNOW THERE ARE PLENTY OF SENIOR (EXPERIENCED) CSI'S AND CSI STUDENTS IN THIS GROUP. EVEN IF YOU KNOW THIS TOPIC OR HAVE LEARNED IN CLASS, PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS, QUESTIONS, AND COMMENTS IN THIS FORUM. I KNOW THERE ARE MANY OTHER SITES TO GO TO FOR CRIME SCENE RELATED DISCUSSIONS, BUT I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT FUN & INTERSTING, AND NETWORK OUR KNOWLEDGE HERE AT PL.

IF YOU DON’T LEARN ANYTHING, AT LEAST IT WILL BE A REFRESHER OR CONFIRMATION OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE.

THANK YOU ALL & SPECIAL THANK YOU TO JULIE (ASEVENPOINTSTAR), THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THIS GROUP, FOR KEEPING THIS GROUP OPEN.

LET’S ROLL!

That was news to me. I have used the ALS for years but never heard of the Semanial Presumptive Test. Good information.

thanks

My Agency has been using Acid Phosphatase for a year of so. We buy the tests in bulk. I love the test! It eliminates us from taking items of evidence that would have no value in court. I personally don't use the "test strips", I use cotton swabs. I think most of our Agents use cotton swabs. Since DNA swabs are more of a reality now, most all CSIs carry tons of cotton swabs. It works well for me...you should try it too! =)

I agree with CSI Mom, we use cotton swabs as well... I've never used the strips or plain paper, interesting though, I'd like to try it to see what you found in your tests!

I have to agree with CSI-Mom also.  we use cotton tipped swabs or filter paper.  the paper youmentiond that came in the sirchie kits are labratory type filter paper.  cotton swabs are easier to use and inexpensive as compared to filter paper that you have to find in lab supply or medical supply catalogs.  The ALS findings will come with experience and you will find yourself making easier decisions on areas to test when the ALS becoems second nature to you.  hope that helps a little.

For semen detection testing I recommend the CheckMate semen detection products. The CheckMate test kit can test numerous items for the presence of semen. Plus, it's also been on the market for many years and is considered to be the absolute gold standard test for the presence of semen on any type or color of material. You can visit: whats really going on dot com to find out about the CheckMate semen detection test kit.
