WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. -- A 42-year-old Washington County corrections officer is in a coma following brain surgery after she was exposed to pepper spray during a training session on Monday.

Joann Haney's brother, Greg Ross, told Channel 11 News reporter Alan Jennings that his sister had a serious reaction to the spray and was immediately taken from the Washington County Jail to a local hospital, where she was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She underwent brain surgery to stop blood vessel bleeding, Jennings reported.

According to Haney's brother, Greg Ross, she was on blood pressure medicine, and doctors said the pepper spray caused her blood pressure to go sky high.

According to Ross, his sister went into convulsions and a coma immediately after she was sprayed.

Ross said a neurosurgeon who operated on his sister told him the pepper spray aggravated her already high blood pressure, causing the bleeding in the brain.

Ross contends his sister was lifetime certified in pepper spray training when she was a guard at the Cambria County Jail.

She was recently hired at the Washington County Jail, where officials reportedly refused to acknowledge her prior certification and required her to be pepper sprayed during a training session, Jennings said.

According to her brother, Haney may have permanent brain damage. She remains in a coma and in serious condition in a neuro-intensive care unit.

Warden Joe Pelzer has not returned phone calls about the incident.

This is very unfortunate. I wish for good news to come out of this.

This is so very scarey!  Has anyone heard anything more about this?  Did she have a reaction during the first training?

Slow down and breath a little. Not every academy has pepper spray training or mace training. Reactions such as this are rare.

Wow this is the first time I have ever heard of something like this happening. I hope and pray that she can make a full recovery from this.

I could see how this could happen.  I hate pepper spray.  It is very painfull.  I would not do it  again, nor will I be shot with the taser again. Both are very aggravating for a sober person.

My academy does have OC training.  Not really worried for me so much.  I was maced a few years back and it was horrid but I survived.

I tried to look into this but she must have recovered.  Darn media.  It never ties up the loose ends unless there is a mortality.

I have had mace to, but it's nothing compared to pepper spray.  about 10 time worse.
