Posted almost 6 years ago I don't know of anywhere that they can't. In NJ, you cannot have any kind of receiver in your vehicle without a permit.

Posted almost 6 years ago In NJ, you can also carry them on your person, but not in a vehicle. Looks kind of silly though, having a scanner hanging on your belt. But I've seen it many times. I just laugh.

Posted almost 6 years ago Also in NJ you cannot have one at all, including in your house, for the purpsoe of commiting a crime. An example would be, someone selling drugs out of a house and possessing a scanner. This would bring an additional charge.

Posted almost 6 years ago Maybe you should take it away from him for a week as punishment. :) :) Just kidding, of course! He should keep it on. By the time he realizes something is going on in the neighborhood, it's too late. I'd like to hear the initial call go out. Then I know why they are in the neighborhood.

Posted almost 6 years ago We call our area scanner land. Everyone has one. People usually know that were coming before we get there. We have had to come up with new ways of keeping ahead, especially for officer safety.

Posted almost 6 years ago You're darn right SGT1202. Depending on the job, the MDT comes in real handy. If you're going to take a report, radio is fine. Hot calls, and the obvious types should go on the screen. You not only don't want the criminals to know you're coming, you don't want the civilians in the way, or in harms way.

Posted almost 6 years ago In La they are legal in the house but not a vehicle. They don't do much good in my Parish anyway because our radio system is trunked. It works off of about 32 channels and transmits and recieves on a different on each time. The scanners can't follow a conversation like that so they can't figure out whats going on most of the time. Between that and being dispatched most of our traffic to our laptops, the general public is clueless half the time. Some of the small dept's. and fire dept's. still have scannable frequencies so that keeps them entertained. Latina, dust that thing off for that Man and let him have some fun!

Posted almost 6 years ago That's the good thing about trunked. You can only get bits and pieces. Bad for scanner enthusiasts though, I imagine. Finally there is a way of getting over on the criminal element. One for the good guys.

Posted almost 6 years ago Yea....I'm still trying to figure out my trunking system on my scanner. Makes no sense to me lol. I have all the inputs, just dont know how to imput them :( :(All Vice complaints, selling, and stuff like that is never said over the air, in the city, they have it all sent to there computers for the reason of dealers having scanners

Posted almost 6 years ago Our narc and street cimes divisions have incripted channels they work off of. We can't even hear them unless we have the right radio. Yes it is illegal to listen to cell phone conversations here too HOT. I forgot that too. But I used to listen to some very interesting conversations when sitting on all night details. I found out a lot about some people I knew that were, lets say, not quite as upstanding as most people thought they were.

Posted almost 6 years ago They have the capability of picking up the signal of phones, both land line and cell. Electronic stuff i know nothing about. But I do know that it is illegal to listen to phone conversations on them. OK, watercop9901, I'll admit it, I too listened to some very interesting conversations years ago. I worried all these years, but now I don't worry anymore since our FBI can do it. :)
