Today, while transporting a subject to jail I came across a bad storm. I noticed several funnel clouds which were close to touching down. Do you have a plan?? What would you do with your prisoner, where would you seek cover?? Just something to think about. Stay safe.

I would get as close as possible to the funnel clouds, kick the prisoner out the door and then haul ass out of there!!! Just kidding. I can't offer too much help since we don't have many "twisters" up this way!! Stay safe.

NYPDLieutenant: As I'm reading the post, I'm thinking drop the SOB off and haul ass. And then I read yours and I'm still laughing. Great point FLTrafficGuy. It will surely get alot of guys thinking.

depending on how close we were , ask him if he knew GOD , start singing sweet home alabama , and try to haul in the opposite direction , but seriously have had quite a few of of those here , looked for a low lying area like a ditch , ravine or somehthing that afforded the most substantial shelter........and prayer

Our "low lying" areas are full of gators and water moccasins, so that's where I would release the prisoner before heading for the nearest beer joint..heh.

Hey traffic guy...I surely hope you didn't expect serious thoughts from this crew! LOL

I thought we [cops] were all business. LOL

Okay, so far I have gathered I would find the nearest funnel cloud, closet to a area full of gators, while singing Sweet Home Alabama, then kick the prisoner out and get a beer.

I will teach my new recruits of these tactics.

As chaplain, I would like to recommend that, before you do the above, you advise the prisoner to say his prayers.

Chaplain out.

PS. FLTG, what in fact DID you do?

I will now tell you what not to do: DO NOT SEEK SAFETY IN AN UNDERPASS. Thank you.

I have heard the same thing, ZVW. I've been told that the undeside of an overpass becomes a windtunnel full of debris that will rip you up.

Correct. News crew did it and got lucky. Another group, having seen the crew's footage, did it. 2 words. Meat. Sack. It wasn't pretty.

but then again being sucked up into the funnel probably is not a good idea either.

Actually it INCREASES your odds of the funnel grabbing you. The wind is compressed into a smaller area but still has to pass the same volume of air in the same amount of time, so it speeds to to do so.

I grew up in an area that had tornado warnings every spring. Never went through one, myself, but I have spent my share of time in the basement, and I have seen the devastation they cause. I'd rather go through just about anything than a tornado.

I do admit to a fascination with seeing them on film or video. Almost like something alive.

They're fun watching on the weather channel. I just hate the devastation, the injuries, sometime deaths and the lives that are thrown into turmoil. But I do love your sense of humor!
