Hi, everyone! I've been studying law enforcement and criminal justice and graduated in fall with a four-year degree. I've been a CSO for two years at my local department in Minnesota, and after I turned 21 I was hired as a part-time officer. I'm finishing training with an FTO, and I'll be going full-time in summer. I'm starting a master's degree in Public Administration this semester, too.

I originally started going to school for political science, but quickly learned it was not the right fit. I got involved with law enforcement for the community aspects. I am really excited because I know I'll be working with neighborhood organizations, store owners and property owners in one crime-ridden area to hopefully bring some much needed communication in (at least until they change their minds because the department is underfunded). We're also hiring non-sworn employees to bring more of a community aspect that right now is only present in the communities with large tax bases and relatively low crime. A little backwards, huh?

I just joined the site today, and love it already. There are so many things I've learned in the past few hours that I'd never get out of another officer at my department. Unfortunately, I don't think this site can help me shoot more accurately... but I'll just blame the gun. :)

Thanks. After I graduated I took the Minnesota POST test, which requires a degree and the degree required law enforcement classes, an EMS class and a very painful three month M-F 9am-5pm skills course (which covered arrests, traffic stops, and firearms usage), so I was pretty much all set. I have the certification now, and the nine month full academy wasn't required because of the college and CSO experience. I am really happy with how simplified the system is and how well the state, colleges, and local departments worked together. I took a Citizen's Academy class back in high school with Anoka County, I first worked as a CSO with Dakota County, and now I'm in Saint Paul.

I go full time in May, and until then I'm with an FTO on a fairly small beat. Hopefully I'll get to wander outside that a bit and get some other experiences. There's a state law that part-time LEO's can't make arrests without the authorization of a full-time LEO. There aren't many part-timers, so I get made fun of a lot for that, but whatever :D

Thanks everyone. There's information in my profile (interests/school), but it's private. Still not 100% comfortable putting my entire life on the internet, especially in this profession. You're welcome to add me as a friend and see it, though!

Well hun no one is asking to know your 'entire life', just enough to feel comfortable with you. Try putting info on your profile that you are comfortable with everyone to read (in other words, make it public) so everyone can see it. :) (it's called a compromise;)) Or are you just trying to get points for a star? :) LOL

stay safe and God bless
