Hi, I was wondering if I could get some help from all of you, especially vets. I have done plenty of research on the USCG, but I still have some questions I could not find answers to.

Let me start off by saying I am currently 19 years old, a freshman in college working towards a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, and considering time in the military in LE as experience prior to becoming a civillian LEO. My long term goal is to hopefully one day get into the FBI, but I know that is a rough, challenging, and long process. I know you usually have to start at the bottom as an LEO, but I am fine with that and would love to get all the experience I can get. And if I do not get into the FBI, I would love to do detective work or specialize in something after some LEO experience.

Now, what I have learned so far about the Coast Guard is that the LE is made up of the Maritime Enforcement Specialists. I have read that their job is the closest military LE to civilian LE. This is an enlisted rating, however, and the Maritime Law Enforcement Academy requires you to be between the rank of E-4 and O-3. To my understanding, I will be eligible for the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative program by the end of my sophmore year in college. This program kind of works like a GI Bill, but has some slight differences. The Coast Guard will pay for up to 2 academic years, give me a salary while I'm attending school, and allow me to attend Officer Candidate School, become a commissioned officer after training and be committed to a minimum of 3 years active service. However, I am having a hard time finding any information on LE for commissioned officers.

Now for my questions:

If I do all that I have listed above and become a commissioned officer in the Coast Guard, will I be able to work in the LE field? It says the Maritime Law Enforcement Academy requires you to be between the rank of E-4 and O-3, so I assume that it is possible, right? Will the experience in LE in the Coast Guard as commissioned officer be similar to the experience in LE as enlisted? In what ways are they similar and different?

Any answers, advice, suggestions, and validations would be highly appreciated!

My  girlfriend's dad was Coast Guard. Maybe I can ask him.
