Hello, I am a new member, and very excited about this website and my future to want to enter in Law Enforcement. I live in Peoria, Arizona and I want to get some advice. I am trying to find out what are the perks of working for a local city police department, and then the pro's and con's and working for the Maricopa County Sheriff Department? I am 27 also, I feel like I am starting this journey a little late, but what does everyone think? Am I too old, or is my age good? I have lots of life experiences and I know that I would be prepared for this type of job and life. I am very excited. I am looking for anyone who is willing to give me as much info as possible...

Your age is actually perfect if you are fit. I have no info about AZ but good luck and keep up with the great attitude.

Your not to old, but you should contact someone who works for those agencies. You might luck out and find someone on the PL site that works in that area. Good luck in your adventure.

GK, my best advice to you. Sit back and read the posts here. Go back in the Forums and see what has already been asked and answered. Update your profile so folks can get a feel for you.

That will take you a week or so of research time. Then parry down your questions to specifics and some of the locals in the area can take the time to show you around and help you with your quest.

You may find some helpful insight in the various forums here, but your questions are a bit too specific for most of the members of this site (“Sheriff Joe” is about all most people outside of Arizona know about Maricopa County).

All of the valley agencies are competing for the same applicant pool and so the benefits can get pretty competitive (obviously not so much for the smaller agencies like Apache Junction and Guadalupe). The best thing to do is study out the agencies and find which one fits best for you. DPS was a good fit for me because it allowed me to have the independent working structure of an outlying sheriff office, with the competitive pay and benefits of the Phoenix area agencies. Each agency has its own culture and sub-culture (e.g. Highway Patrol Division in Phoenix is far different than the outlying districts) and so you'll be happiest if you try for the one you mesh best with. Interestingly, I have found pay/benefits are not generally the biggest determiner as to whether or not an employee is happy with their agency.

GK, Arizona has a lot of opportunity for LEO positions. Phoenix just approved 400 more officer positions with Phx PD. Sheriff Joe's deputies are top notch and I have only good things to say about them. Working with them has always been a positive experience for BP in that area. Phx PD is also a top notch agency (regardless of their lack luster chief). Check out the "Become A Cop" tab and look up some info. Also go to the "Community" tab and look up LEOs working in the Phx area and ask some questions. If you want some direct answers, go to the source. Call up the agencies you're interested in and speak with a recruiter. Make sure to ask about benefits, they are different from agency to agency.
