Department hiring an 18 year old

Ok, I just want some opinions on this. How would you feel if your department hired an 18 year old. This would be me. I know there would be a lot of factors to consider. I have high school diploma, Steady job as a food service manager since 14 years old(food server at 14, manger at 16), a one year internship with a great department. Clean background, and driving record meaning no contact with the police at all. One of the LEO's that I worked during my internship said he thinks I would make a great officer and really enjoys working with me, and said he thinks I should apply to departments in states where they hire at 18 and go to college part time, and of course after the hiring process and academy I would be 19 or older. He said to him the age doesnt matter, if  you have a good set of morales and have your head on straight and have a high maturity level, then age is just a number. He was saying he would love to have me as a partner because I learn quick and he only has to tell me once how to do something, and I always respectful to him and everyone we deal with. I just wanted to know how some LEO's would feel if your department hired an 18 year old.  I applied to one department to see what happens because it would be a great opportunity but I'm being realistic and don't expect too much to become of it.

Thanks in advance.

Nope. Wouldn't hire an 18 year old. Period.

Two reasons:

1. Most agencies in my area are requiring at least 30 units of college credit. You don't have that as an 18 year old.

2. You can't do a bar check with me. Can't go into establishments if the age limit is 21 years.

Sorry. 18 years old is ok for driving and enlisting. But not for LEO-Land.

Come to think of it, why don't you just enlist. You'd get good training, maybe a little more education, some maturity .... it'll get you squared away for law enforcement.

I'm 18 years old, and I am currently in the background stages of being hired for my local sheriff's office.

As a Road Deputy, Special, Intern? What's the age for owning a handgun in your state? If it's 21, will that hinder your getting hired? Just curious (after, I don't know as much as I'd like;  lol)

As a Jailer I would imagine?....Jailer is alot diff then a Road Deputy.

That's always a possibility, too. On a side note, Matthew. Why are you on your computer. Shouldn't you be studying or training or something??

In most states, you must be 21 to carry and possess a firearm.  In Colorado you could not even purchase ammo for a pistol, much less carry  one.  18 is WAY to young.  23 is more like it.

I noticed several comments regarding the age to own a handgun. I am certain this base is covered if 18 year olds are eligibible for appointment as a police officer. There is probably a waiver or a city ordinance covering this topic. I wouldn't even concern myself with this. That is why God made city attorneys for these decisions.

If there is a possibility of going to work in the jail until you're 21 I would recommend it.  I started in the jail at 19 and was hired as an officer at 21.  I used those two years to get an Associates Degree, learn how the department worked and to mature.  I had a step up on those that were hired with me and was two years closer to retirement.

Okay Sgt. Isn't maturity great. I'm speaking of your maturity since I refuse to completely grow up. Thanks for the response however.

Wow, futurecop1993. Joined today and came out swinging?? On a thread that's been dead for 2 years?? Nice first impression.

I have no problem with you wanting to become an LEO, but with that attitude and lack of proper grammar, you probably won't make it very far. Sit back, take a breath, re-think things and use a little common sense.

Good luck.

Is this the kind of grammar and sentence structure they are teaching 15 year old high school graduates? And I totally disagree with the thought process that you are perfect for the job.

Give him credit for apparently being able to use the search function.  As others have said take a deep breath and relax.

Remember it is up to a department to decide to hire or not hire an individual, regardless of the comments  here.

Young man, Pray listen to people like 36TR and GrayPanther and me for that matter as we three are all very experienced LEO's and Uncle Dennis was a Chief and TheSarge IS a Sgt. with a top LE agency and is an Instructor and the head honcho on this website and they are both highly respected and liked. Slow down and try and understand that you may be smart in the book learning sense, but you are quite ignorant of the real world out there. I have a son who is exceptional with an IQ almost at 170 who graduated from Collage BEFORE he graduated from HS. About a week or two before actually. He is now 30 and would be the first to tell you that you don't know Jack yet. If you have your 4 yr degree join the military as an Officer and learn how to deal with others and command them as well as serving your nation. After the 4 or 6 yrs you can decide if you wish to remain in the military or get out and become a Police Officer. With THAT background you will be hired quickly and may well advance through the ranks quickly if you have learned your leadership and people handling skills.

......B.A. an yet I see many grammar and spelling errors in your posts....I would think one with such a flawless background would not only how to conduct a structured sentence but also know how to act in a forum that's LEO-dominant.....

things that make me get out the side eye pics....

Again, I say ..... Whaaa ?

Someone is talking but I can't hear a word they're saying.

Let me see if I get this: You want to be a cop at 18...? Seems to me you'd make a better scout leader.

Good pic of Putin,CadetAK..The majority age was set at 18 ,some years ago,in my state.Does not mean that they are necessarily immature, but at that age they are much closer to the playing "Cops and Robbers"stage than they are at realizing the awesome responsibilities and ramifications of carrying an instrument of deadly force.

Bump.  You were actually able to understand that rambling, runon sentence of garbage?  I tried and got a headache.

I was able to follow it. Of course, I copied it, pasted it in my word program, did a "Spell Check" and "Grammar Check" and when the computer was done fixing it 45 minutes later, I read it (roflmao)

Disrespectful, boastful, sloppy, wrong-headed, poorly-spoken.  In public.  Undesireable traits at any age.

Wouldn't want you to take the stand as a fair witness on our society's behalf.

LOL well spoken! That is actually good sentence and grammar for down south here.

To the original question, never happen here. Futurecop? Highly doubtful.
