Well, I'm sad to announce that 45 layoff notices have been sent out by my department. I am even more sad that these are friends and that the lives of their families are at risk. What the administrtion is asking us to give up is: our 3% increase for 2010, longevity pay, uniform allowance 2010, and a reduction in our holiday pay from double time and a half to time and a half. For the record, I can not in good conscience look these fellow deputies in the face knowing that I voted not to take concessions, and allow these deputies to go home with pink slips, so I am for some of these concessions, if it will save 45 jobs. Lastly, the administration are calling for demotions across the board (i.e.) captians to lieutenants, lieutenants to sergeants, and sergeants back to deputies. The catch to all of this is that if sergeants return to deputies, they go back to their original higher date which pushes everyone further down the seniority list. As it stands now, the number of sergeants to be demoted is 20. We as the deputies union will have to decide to vote the demoted sergeants back in, so this is a real tough situation, and this a will take place by December 21, 2009, if concessions are not made. I would love to hear from anyone with suggestions.

In Medina County, we just came through a lot of that and it's ugly, at best.  The COs in the back nearly came to blows, literally, several times.  theres a lot to consider.  Once you give up the concessions and avert the layoffs, how long does that last?  They asked us for furlough days and most people figured that once they take the last furlough day, the layoffs go through anyhow.  All of the fixes are just temporary, unless the economy bucks up.  That said, we were able to swing some concessions that didn't hurt too bad and it looks like we may have gotten past the worst of it. We had to give back the remainder of our raises, burn all of our holidays instead of banking them and no OT except for court (we comp or flex it out instead).  It's all very emotional and we hated being put on the hot seat, but it really cant be avoided..  As Im sure you know, IT SUCKS!  In the last year we lost about 15 COs and 1 deputy, a lot less than they were asking for. Get your ducks in a row and hold the commissioners accountable, then .... hope for the best.  It really blows being the pawns in their game!
