Posted 18 days ago Prior record is a stumbling block. If you have the same skill set as another person without a record they will get chosen first every time. The more training you have had or the more experience you have the fewer people who that may have the same skills. But there are thousands that have weapons and hand to hand. I am sorry to say that it does not look good for you. You have to have somthing unique to set you apart in a positive way. The charges you have described will hurt you alot. drink up me 'arties yo ho avast ye don't ask we be friends if 10 post we not shared AARGH ye be prepared to kiss the gunners daughter if I be crossed

Posted 18 days ago Is your conviction a felony? Also, I'd work on your grammar.

Posted 18 days ago No it is not a felony, it is a Class 1 misdemeanor and i use proper grammar most of the day during the week. I just figured that i was safe here sorry didnt mean to offend.

| Posted 15 days ago No offense taken but please realize there are quite a few people who come into these threads that are trolling for information without the desire to be in this profession, there are also those that think grammer lives with grampers and you see them at Christmas. The people here can be very helpful or they can be very unhelpful, just like real life a lot of it depends on how you carry yourself. As for your conviction on a Misdemeanor assault, I am not familiar with the laws of the state that it took place in. I would recommend finding a comparrison in the state you wish to be a LEO in and then checking with an agency. Some misdemeanors are not a problem and some are. Wish you luck. | Posted 14 days ago I think it also has to do with which department you apply for. The bigger the department (FBI, CIA, ATF, etc.) maybe the harder the chances. However if it is a misdemeanor and it was over 6 years ago, the chances of you getting the job, could be very positive. But as the one person said, they will pick someone with no record over someone with a record. I personally think a person with a record (not one with murder or rape or anything so bad) could actually be an asset to the department. If you get what I am saying. And it also depends on your honesty and who your background investigator is. In my office, some of the investigators wouldn't throw you a dime for what you have been convicted of but if you get someone who is decent and can read past your negatives, well you might just get that second chance! |

Posted 14 days ago Depends on what the facts of the case were. A Class 1 Misdemeanor in Colorado is one step under a Felony charge. Must have been some assault, or there was a weapon involved.

Posted 14 days ago well if I where you I would try and get your record sealed even though they can still open in if they want to. But the best advice I can give you is if this is truely what you want keep beating on doors until someone lets you in.

Posted 14 days ago Where I am Class 1 Misd. is 12months/$2500.00 In your posts you also elude to "being clean and sober" . Does this mean you are recovering now? Like twoliver said, coming to a professional police website to ask the "professionals" their opinions I would think someone would want to show their best. Am reading too much into this? Or just being me. Every one jumps on the expungement bandwagon. Facts are facts. Crimes still crimes. I don't see a dept. hiring with your background.

Posted 14 days ago Hey I am in Texas as you are. I do backgrounds for my department and I would have to look at your personal history statement pretty hard. I would also request a copy of the police report and the clean and sober thng would also come in effect. The other thing would be what is on your criminal histroy. Good luck.

Posted 14 days ago As i have said, I am clean and sober and have been for 2 years now. The only other stuff on my record is a conviction for PI when i was 18 other than that I'm good. I know its going to be twice as hard for me to get a job with a violent crime, but like I said I'm hard headed. And no there were no weapons used just my hands and brute strength.

Posted 14 days ago I call it like I see it, ask anyone here. I would say you have almost no chance of getting hired by any agency, at least for now. A misdemeanor 1 Assault conviction plus past drug use? I don't see it happening for you. Sorry to be so blunt. I understand that you are trying to turn things around and I certainly respect that. But there are just some things out there that you will not be able to get into. The military experience is helpful but there are tons of veterans out there competing for LE jobs, especially now. You can put your application(s) in because the worst thing they can saw is no. But I wouldn't bother applying right now if I were you. You say you have been "clean and sober" for 2 years? That isn't very long at all. You are going to have to be "clean and sober" for at least another 3 to 8 years depending on what we are talking about (as far as what you had been doing and how much) before any agency will even begin to consider you (maybe longer). There are several reasons for this. Of course if you had a coke or heroin habit, you can wait forever and it won't help. One thing you can do is look into private security jobs. It's a good stepping stone and if you get the right job, it can pay a little. From what I hear, loss prevention for larger retail stores pays better than most private security jobs. Besides, you will need to wait a few years anyway.

I know in PA, a first degree misdemeanor will disqualify you from law enforcement, ccw, and other things. Police officers are held to a much higher standard than any other profession. Having a record like that prior to a law enforcement career is probably a disqualifying factor. |
