Conditional Job Offer

Posted 19 days ago Hello, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with conditional job offers and civil service laws. I received a conditional job offer for police officer with the city. I completed all of the interviews and medical over the summer. The academy was supposed to start this fall. They even received grant money from the COPS program but that went to hiring back laid off officers. The civil service list expires next summer. So my question is since I received a conditional job offer does that expire with the list when it expires? Or is the conditional job offer good until they decide to hire next even if it's after the list expires? I have heard they can even vote to extend the list. Has this happened with anyone else? Any advice? Thanks in advance.

| Posted 19 days ago I have never heard of a conditional job offer. Unless they tell you you're hired, the academy starts in two months, stay out of trouble. If they used the grant money to get laid off officers back on the payroll my guess would be that you are not going to be hired. I would continue to look for a job. I would also try to get a straight answer from someone in authority about what is going to happen. Try to find out how many laid off officers are being rehired and if there will still be any vacant officer positions. eg. five were laid off, two got other jobs and do not want to come back, three came back. They have two vacant positions - you and someon else. Good luck. Jimmy85 |

| Posted 19 days ago I would assume that a conditional job offer is the same as a COE (conditional offer of employment), which means that they intent to hire you when the funding/academy starts, but are not planning on hiring you until that time as they don't want to pay your salary in the interum. Usually a COE means that they want you and hope you won't go elsewhere between the time of the COE and the time they can actually put you on the payroll. If you have not received any info that they are no longer planning on hiring you, you are probably in a waiting game for money to become available. Do you know if they cancelled the academy or just posponed it, if they just posponed it due to funding, they may start it after the fist of the year. | Posted 16 days ago Thanks for the great replies! I received a conditional offer of employment, I should of been more specific. I have not received any information stating they are no longer interested in hiring me. One of the conditions of the conditional offer was funding was available which it's not right now. I did pass medical and psychological (haven't received anything saying other wise). This was all in early July with plans to start the academy in August. Right after that the city's budget turned upside and instead of hiring they realized they needed to lay off about 100 officers. The union worked out a deal so no one was laid off. So now I am just anxiously waiting to hear anything at all. I was just wondering if the hiring list expires in June 2010 if my Conditional Offer of Employment also expires on that date. I think it does. A friend further down the list who did not receive a Conditional Offer of Employment said he wished he had a conditional offer incase the list expires. An officer with the department told him that they were trying to make conditional offers incase the list expires so they would still be okay. I don't think that's right though from some people I talked with and from what I've read. I am pretty sure the civil service commission or the city would have to vote to extend the entire list past June 2010. So my 2 questions were: 1.) Does my conditional offer of employment expire in June 2010 along with the list? 2.) If so can the city vote to extend that list? I think I know all the answers but was wondering if anyone was in a situation similar to this. I think I also have a hard time sitting around waiting so I got on here just to post about it. :)

| Posted 16 days ago I think you will have to contact the agency to get the answers to your 2 questions, that is something that i wouldn't know about, and it depends on city/agency policy, and this is not consistent from city/agency to city/agency or even within a city/agency at different times, depending on circumstances. | Posted 16 days ago A conditional job offer around our parts is simply an offer of employment if you complete the criteria laid out by the wooing or courting agency. Around here, a conditional job offer (it actually is called that around here) usually says this: If you finish the academy and pass all the employment protocols, you have a job waiting for you. Sometimes it is baited and 'hooked' with an agency paying for your ammo that you used during the firearms classes, the wearing of an agency patch on your academy uniform or other minor compensation. Just a little something to keep you hooked and committed to follow that agency. This offer is most always presented to an academy cadet who is putting themselves through the academy..... and independent. As has already has been suggested, you will need to get clarification for yourself. I might add that you don't want to sound like you are trying to leverage a job by finding some kind of binding contractual agreement in the verbiage of the conditional offer. That would be the quickest way to see the back side of an employment door. |
