Hello all. I am a recent addition to this online community, and I am trying to maximize it's use in a search for a career path. This fall I will be completing my BA in Criminal Justice from Mount St. Mary's University (also a member of National CJ Honor Soceity), and have been looking for the next step. I am 27, and my wife and 15 month old daughter live in central Maryland, and I would prefer job placement in the mid Atlantic region for family reasons - my in-laws are in PA, and my brother & his family are in London, so it would be nice for my parents to have access to at least one grandchild.
I have worked almost 2 years now in college law enforcement, but I know I want something that is not going to be shift work on the street. Yeah, I will say it: I would be content being a Dilbert Desk Jockey. As long as I can provide for my family, I will be happy.
Does anyone in this network in this area have any ideas or suggestions? I have tried utilizing my college career center, but haven't had much success. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Scott A. Grau

Scott, I am afraid that if you go into police work you will be working shifts. That is just the nature of the game. The only thing I can think of that may be different would be working in plant security and loss prevention. I just do not think that you would enjoy that as it would not be very challenging and many of those that are hired into this field are retired LEO's looking for a second career. You have to start at the street level and that involves shifts.

sgrau--back to your main question, are you wanting to work the road only, or just something in criminal justice?

I'm just here and do what I'm told..

I am looking for options other than patrol work, be it in the courts, juvenile justice / probations, crime analysis, government work...
Really, I am trying to garner as many ideas as possible.

I am not a police officer, but a police supporter. However, I do have knowledge of the field, due to many friends "in the business". If I may, sgrau, I am aware that your best bet for steady shifts would be the larger city departments, Also, many departments have schedules now that are 12 hour shifts, 3 on, 3 or 4 off, or some variation. With this type of scheduling, you are only dealing with 2 shifts, as opposed to days, swing and midnights. The best of luck in your search, and hopefully you will search and find a suitable position with-in a police department, because god knows, we need you!
