Posted 18 days ago I think it's time we move ahead with a forward thinking agenda for PoliceLink. In the future, links to certified training classes throughout the nation, conferences and the like will make their way to PoliceLink. As we move ahead, PL has the potential of being a 'one-stop shop' for all things law enforcement. A kind of "PoliceLink Google-type" of place. One aspect continues to be softly present on PL. This would be the mentoring environment that already exists here. We have many veteran officers (retired and active) who are always passing on vital if not critical mentoring advise for new people or interested people. I am not talking about the 'One-Post Wonders' who come on, barf and puke all over the place and claim to want to enter the law enforcement field. I am talking about the people who are seeking out a law enforcement career. Alright, I have had to make some concessions. It is easy for me to tell someone to head off to H/R, the Personnel Dept., pick up an ap, fill it out, submit it and wait. That is kind of old school. Now, many agencies will accept an employment application online. And people are getting 'online' to ask questions about our career. Lots of them need a little nudge in the right direction. The people who come on with prior problems will repeatedly need to be advised of problems in LEO-Land relative to their past problems but, veteran cops/deputies, don't tire of answering. Although it's been adressed many times, the first timer on the site has no clue, and much like ourselves, wants to get right to it. We can't treat everyone like they're pinheads simply because they don't know what to do or what question to ask. That's why they come here. I am creating a group called The Sarge's LEO Mentoring Crew. It will consist of LEO's only. I am asking that if you submit a request to join the group that you have some credibility in the law enforcement field as far as time in grade, FTO training, specialty training, or can be the dispenser of sage wisdom for noobs. This is going to be fluid but, heck, nothing has to be sooooo thought out that it loses steam before it even gets started. (The old observation of an elephant is a mouse built by a committee.) I am not going to do a background invest on anyone who submits a request. But you gotta be a LEO and you gotta care enough to want to be involved. Being involved simply means contacting people in the Introductions area (at first) to answer honestly, professionally, and candidly questions for people. Brevity is helpful. We might even come up with a profile designator that indicates you're a volunteer Site Mentor. Maybe a Site FTO or similar. Just thinking out loud. Do not put this in your profile at this time. More than a social networking website, we have the potential of being a real deal resource and not just a place to hang out. And, now that I am thinking about it, maybe I could launch a group called The Sarge's Non-Sworn Mentoring Team for those interested in forensics, records keeping, Community Service Officer work, etc. I am counting on anyone being on any team to be honest with themselves and not a wannabe. People will see right through that kind of persona. Let's give it a whirl. Again, it's fluid and we'll give it time. Thoughts? Questions? and bump, please.... Thanks. The link for LEO's is here: http://policelink.monster.com/groups/3501-the-sarges-leo-mentoring-team The link for Non-Sworn is here: policelink.monster.com/groups/3502-the-sarges-non-sworn-mentoring-team
