Hay yall.  Im a currently a reserve officer in a small town here in central ohio.  Im married ( to a cop) and have 2 kids and one on the way.  I am hoping to get a full time position ( with some luck my department will go full time) soon.  Right now I spend my time taking care of my kids as i was terminated from a security job i was working.  Long story on that but comes down to a guy who is a cop wanna be  but never will be and take it out on those of us who are.

OPD260,

I hear where you're coming from with working security and being a peace officer experience. I worked full-time as a security officer at a hospital and was a reserve officer for a police department here in Texas. We were dispatched to a disturbance call in the hospital involving an intoxicated male subject. He was also very disorderly because he kepts using profanity loud enough for visitors to hear him. Being a peace officer, I wanted to detain him until city officers arrived, but he was eventually kicked off property by other security officers. Afterwards, I was told by my supervisor that I was not there on the capacity of a peace officer and I was told not to bring my police badge to work nor act under the authority of a peace officer while working security there.

The interesting thing was, about 10 months later, another security officer (who was not a peace officer nor was he ever a peace officer) arrested and handcuffed a person for Criminal Trespass. This person had already been told not to return to the hospital (which the State of Texas requires before one can be charged with Criminal Trespass), but he returned anyway. The hospital did not wish to file on the guy, so he was allowed to leave ... but that security officer was given a "pat on the back" by security management for his actions. Go figure! I'm still trying to figure out how and why that happened ... I mean, how does security management frown upon a peace officer making an arrest or detention, but support a civilian making an arrest??? I don't get it ... but at least for the most part, it did humor me.

     And welcome to Police Link!!!

Talon , I know here in the state of ohio security officers ( no matter if they are sworn leos or not) can only detain people and can only use cuffs when there is a possibility of violence.   Not to say that on a a few occasions I let it slip that I was a cop and that if they wanted to go toe to toe I would be more then happy to call some friends to help out.   It just seems that the mid level guys see security as a way to live out there dreams of being a cop when they have no chance to be come one.
