| Posted about 1 month ago I love dogs and they are wonderful creatures and have truly been man's best friend down thru the ages. Many are strong willed and need a lot of patience and skilled trainers. My favorite trainer is of course 'CAAESAR MILAN. My Gosh, the man gets into the head of every dog he encounters and he makes so much sense when he says he REHABILITATES DOGS and trains PEOPLE! What are your thoughts on this man.? We had a case here in NC. where the K-9 officer was beating his dog and He was caught and fired from his job. Too bad , but I've always said that anybody who beats any animal is a piece of garbage. A beating is not a Short cut to being a succesful trainer. **** Officer Down and those who serve dedicated to the serving the public good. |

| Posted 28 days ago Good point Sniper... your question was for law enforcement training. The way we do it is 1st take the dogs to the gun range and just have them around the noise. Then we pull them out and do obedience work will some one is firing different calibur weapons. Then when that is completed we start to go into decoy work with the decoy firing different calibur weapons. When doing decoy work we use the .38, 9mm, and .556 so we are able to fire blank rounds out of it. |

| Posted 28 days ago Talk with those who hunt with dogs. They have to learn not to be gun shy and I don't know how the reach this unless as pups and at a very early age just as the hunter hunts and shoots, birdogs retrieve and never 'FLETCH"....??? | Posted 28 days ago If the dogs have already been trained, this shouldn't be an issue. They should have had basic gunfire during the basic training. Run and gun scenarios with both the handler and the "bad guy" shooting. For more advanced training you might want to advance with a tactical squad and do some bite work while simunitions is being used. Don't shoot the dog. You could also do a building search, move and clear and down the dog if gunfire starts, recall the dog so the SRT or SWAT can move in tactically. There are many scenarios, it is only limited by your imagination and experiance.

| Posted 28 days ago We did a lot of this type of training before this deployment, and it's definatly an experience. I will give you this advice though, Once you have a dog that is proficent on gunfire training using blanks you should try live fire training. You may not think there's much of a difference but I assure you a bullet flying through the air has a sound and the dogs can hear or sense it. We had veteran dogs that could care less with a blank gun is fired, flip out during live fire. It's a different feel and they know it. You also might want to look into training with Ground Burst Simulators (GBS) and Smoke. Once you get proficent with these you can introduce the team concept. I'd recommend using other handlers or people who are fimiliar with dogs to make up a fireteam at first in case something goes wrong. Hope this helps. Agree, our local PD trained their canines with Kongs, and the play was a reward...I love Ceasar Millan, so many people get dogs as an accessory, and have no comprehension of the incredible exercise needs, and companionship needs of dogs, maybe the guy could have gotten a pay cut and not be allowed to be a canine officer, which is an extraordiary honor....we were all taught that when the canines are released to freeze, cause they work pretty much with their handler and can see any movement as the bad guy. I was always glad I didn't have one tho, cause I know I would take a bullet for any of my dogs. |

We have local groups that shoot off their horses, like training any animal, systematic desensitization is key...make the bang soft at first coupled with treats, play, etc. and then slowly increase the volume as the animal is no longer experiencing it as a danger signal. |
