Posted about 1 month ago I was tasked with finding new ammo for the Dept. to issue. I came across the Winchester Ranger "T" series ammo. I like what I am reading about it and the info that I have found so far. Most of it is from the company though. I was wondering if anyone on here is familiar with the ammo and could tell me if they recommend I purchase it or not. At my Dept. we can chose between 9mm, 40cal, 45cal and .357, so I would be purchasing all of them. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Asking about the best ammo is almost like asking about the best firearm, with that said, i have carried the T series but never had any reason to fire any of it. Evey day is just the same, I'm chasing rainbows in the rain. AWB nickname "Wiz" |

| Posted about 1 month ago The Winchester Rangers are a great round! So are the Speer Gold Dots. The CorBon DPX is also starting to become more popular, especially at my Dept. http://www.dakotaammo.net/products/corbon/dpx.htm http://www.winchester.com/lawenforcement/flash/win_flash.html Who's in charge of this mess?? |

| Posted about 1 month ago My agency had an officer-involved shooting with a subject inside a car several years ago. The issued ammo was Federal Hydrashok and did not penetrate the windows or skin of the door sufficiently to stop the subject. The range guys got a bunch of different hi-performance .40 ammo and the Speer Gold Dot came out the best after shooting it into cars, ballistic gellatin and wet phone books. Depth of penetration, ability to stay together and wound channel were all assessed. They have not conducted any new testing of recent developments but the God Dot has been good for putting down injured deer and elk for me. I also shot a pit bull who was at large after it killed two lambs. I hit it in the hind end from 75-80 yards away and it raked forward into the body cavity causing a mortal wound. I have heard greeat things about the new Winchester ammo and Cor-Bon and you probably wouldn't go wrong with them. I understand the Winchester is an improvement on the old Black Talon stuff, only in a more PC package. |

| Posted about 1 month ago This would be an excellent challenge for the MYTHBUSTERS ! So many factors to consider to settle on 1 type of round. In my first personal defense weapon I carried 2 shotshells,2 sjhp, 2 fmj in that order. I know alot of dept have policies on what can be carried but I wanted some options on my personal carry weapon. It was a Colt Cobra 6 shot revolver , I could CHOSE the rounds I wanted very quickly if decided to skip the shot shells or even got direct ot fmj it only took 2 clicks in either direction. That was when I worried about overpenetration more than anything else. Today I carry Kahr CW 40 ( just stolen) with the first 4 rounds fmj the next 3 are , were, sjhp.Don't reallyknow why ?? I guess if I get stuck against some crack head the final 3 rounds should take him down? No real eveidence , just my 'gut'.. So after all that I guess I'm saying that with all the new types of rounds available today it may be beneficial to consider 'mixing rounds'... Thanks for listening, Bill |

In the same magazine? I would advize against that...different manufacturers put different loads and powders in their bullets. Your recoil repor is going to be all over the place- I'd like to see you do a rapid fire on a target at 10 feet with a mixed magazine....might just be an eye-opener. The only thing I would see mixing rounds with is maybe a shotgun....put the first couple as slugs and the rest as buckshot.... Other than that- we're talking differences in halves of inches for penetration between defensive rounds within the same grain of bullets. FMJ? Ever though about what would happen if you just hit the bad guy in the arm? It will go through and keep going...keeping a seperate mag with FMJ wouldn't be a bad idea though...you've got a guy behind cover shooting at you? Do a tactical reload with your FMJ mag and voila! My 2 cents... |

| Posted about 1 month ago I went to a test shoot. The bonded Gold Dot expanded and pentrated more reliably than the Winchester Ranger. Particularly when shot throught barriers. Winchester tends to expereince jacket seperation which will effect expansion and penetration. Just something to think about. Another issues with 40 S&W Glocks is when using 165 gr ammo with a pistol mounted light. Apparently it causes the slide to move at a higher velocity. With mounted lights and standard pressure 165 gr ammo Glocks tend to malfunction. Speer manufactures a reduced velocity in the 165 to reduce this problem. Not to get off topic but the malfunction with the light attached to the glock is not the ammo its the spring you have to get a heavier spring we had the same problem with 180 gold dots and after changing the spring we had no more problems!! |

| Posted about 1 month ago swany- my ignorance..I have heard that Glocks misfeed when 'limpwristed' ..same issue when a light is mounted? I ask b/c I am considering a light for my 19 knowing the light mounting location is not on the slide are the problems the result of the same effect ???. .
RIOT- 1 I hate shotguns and always gave the privilage to my partner.. as far a accuracy, I practice FREQUENTLY, meaning weekly competition (during my days now just monthly) and used this configuration ( less shotshell) during competition.NO REASON TO PRACTICE IF IT'S NOT REALISTIC ! NEVER MISSED THE TARGET ( within the 7 ring) much less 'all over the place'. We practiced at 25 feet as well as 25 yards, yep a loooonngg way for a pistol (comp distance) . I used all similar as possible ammo,no +p etc . Realistically, a 'normal' man is about the width of 2 - 8" wide targets, with that in mind, shots would have to wildly scatter and totally miss the paper in order to miss a typical man ,not the case. I think it's all a mater of HOW you practice, you prefer a tactical reload, I prefer a combination of rounds-fmj the last. As I said, it was when I was really concerned with OVER PENETRATION, this gave me the options I wanted such as in the case of a 'fleeing felon' don't really want a kill shot but I want to take the 'flee' out of him. If teh shot shells failed I wanted to be careful of innocents out of my field of view..If the sjhp failed, I'm not leaving this problem/ threat for another LEO..If I can't do the job with 4 rounds, YES I'm going to FMJ, MyGLOCK will eat anything as will my now gone Kahr.. and it wasn't a problem with a revolver though it WAS more sensitvie to different rounds(2" barrel and lightweight alloy) Question- why slugs first ? I would do just the opposite ??/ As I did with my off duty..shot shel, sjhp,fmj..We are backasswards from each other?/ Remember I hate shotguns, just b/c of he shot spread, uncontrollable in my mind and more of a threat to my partner than a perp ( in my mind so I am better off without it) Just a thought..I'm not real good with a long gun but am more than proficient with most pistols therefore that's what I used. I get the impression that you do quite alot of shooting, maybe even a sniper, which explains you exacting requirements. Most of us are real happy hitting the 7 ring consisitently at 25 feet during combat qualifting.. You, i think, one shot one kill cold bore at 3/4 mile ?? Way out of my league. As for computers, I agree, if I can't fix it I don't return it I shoot it !!! (kidding I don't pollute)but we have alot of the same interests just a different outlook. The old saying Whatever works for YOU is important. Luv to get together and shoot someday, I think I'd learn alot . You ever get to the MidWest ? I go to Crater Lake OR occasionally thru WA....Thanks Guys PS.. Remember this was for my OFF DUTY weapon 1 mag no spares. not the same as on duty , 3 mags and a 4.5 barrel,..Dept had mandates on ammo...Thanks again PLEASE STOP BY AND HELP KEEP A COP KILLER OFF THE STREETS- THIS IS MY OLD PD-- The puke is up for parole, again, and we want him to have no chance--

| Posted about 1 month ago bfriskey, I know that with 1st and 2nd generation glocks they were having problems with ejecting rounds with the light attached, our swat team had 2nd generation glocks and had this problem. The problem was the spring was not heavy enough with the added wait of the light to eject the round. Glock has heavier replacement springs that you can get to fix this problem. As far as I have heard 3rd and 4th gen glocks don't have this problem. Most of the time if you limpwrist it you get stove pipes. If you attached a light shoot it first with the light to see if you will have this problem. Good Luck! |

| Posted about 1 month ago According to ATK ammunition. They are currrently only experiencing malfunctions in 40 S&W when shooting 165 gr ammo with pistol mounted lights. I personally never seen and I have a light on mine. I've put probably 1500 rds thru my gun in the last two years. No problems with 180 of a few different manufacturers. It was not a problem with any other caliber of Glock either just the 40 You have the rest of you life to solve the problem, how long your life lasts depends on how well you do it. -Clint Smith |

Both have their advantages...you're thinking of a fleeing person when engaged, I'm thinking you going for the shotgun because you're engaged in a stand-off with the subject(s) and need it to go through their car door.
Sniper? Hardly...I'm barely scratching the surface with optics, ballistics and trajectories. 99% of all my shooting has been with open sights or 0x magnification sights.
Heck, I learn something new everytime I shoot....or at least I try to. If you ever come up this way let me know, might just have to put some lead down range.

| Posted 17 days ago I am retired now, but 10 year's ago I was involved in a Officer involved shooting, long story short the suspect was in a truck who had rammed my car, as I exited the vech. he came at me again I fired 4 shoots from my glock .40 useing the old ranger black talon, now I think it is call the ranger stx?? Someone please correct me if I am wrong, I am sorry, the all 4 shoots went through the windsheild two were head shoots that expand wonderfully, and one hit in the shoulder, all rounds had perferct expansion, so I am a little found of the ranger brand, today I carry the Powerball brand in my weapon, has anyone heard anything about how this round performs? Box says it is about 1500 fps, (I think it is or close) and around 536 foot pounds and again I may be wrong but these numbers are close. Again any info or stories/experience with these rounds I would love to hear from you. Thanks, God Bless. Chaplain Doug |
