Hello Everyone, I'am from Ohio and have Type 1 Diabetes.

I have always wanted to be a police officer. I have always had this feeling inside that i was put here on earth to protect people.Right now i work security work and would like to move on to law enforcement. My problem is i dont want to go to school and get a criminal justice degree and be turned down because of my diabetes. It is harder for type 1's to control then type 2's who don't use insulin. I try to keep it under control and it usually is although times happen when i have a high or low. I believe a department cant discriminate do to a Disability. Just wonder what can i do ,any police officers out there who are diabetic let me know!

Thanks

You might want to check with specific depts.  at a former agency, i worked with an officer who had an insulin pump, he had type 1 diabetes and was working as a LEO.

I am type 1 as well and researched a lot before I went to school. Bigger departments (minneapolis) used to disqualify you if you were diabetic. Most departments in MN wont DQ you just for that. I talked to several current LEO's and they researched if for me as well, and the only thing you could have trouble doing is becoming a Fed.
