You shouldn't have to be unless the Department you get hired by carries them.  OC spray exposure is usually the norm.  That is worse than the Taser.

Taser is no big deal - yea it is freaky, you will be immobilized, but the second the "ride" is over, it is over. OC you will be feeling the effects of for awhile, and when u get home and in the shower you get peppered again, LOL.

As a former aircraft electrician for the Air Force, getting "bit" by electricity is not unheard of, nor something I'd be afraid of.

If you're going to be a butcher, plan on getting cut; if you're going to be a cook, plan on getting burned; if you're going to be an electrician, then plan on being shocked.

No TASER in the academy that I am attending however, the OC was awesome. Having never ridden the lightning I cannot speak to its effects but after having been sprayed across the face with OC I can tell you, I THINK that I would rather be tased. Watching the video afterwards is a hoot but there isn't anything funny about OC while you are being "affected". It was raining while we were being sprayed so the OC went some places where it shouldn't be. We had one guy decontaminating his nether regions afterwards. THAT was funny!

You can't cure stupid.

I wish they would get OC out of the way the first week.  I am NOT looking forward to it.  I think the program I am attending will let us volunteer to get tased.  Not sure why anyone would do this?  Volunteer I mean.  I was shocked once and it.was.not.fun!

Depends on the Academy or the Instructors if the taser is part of the Academy. If it man up and take it and move on! When I went through it, it was either aligator clips on the pants and one on the shoe. The Instructor will say taser 3 times then fire. It will last about 5 seconds. The elecricity runs from one probe to the other, so basically it goes out one probe through your body then back to the other probe completing the cycle. The other way is they shoot you with the probs into the back.

You wouldn't go in there for a million bucks...A Cop does it for less...A Reserve does it for free....

I used to be friends with a police officer who sent me a video of him being tasered as part of the training.  Oh my goodness! LOL

I am sure that it is funny to watch but, with my luck, I'd be the poor sucker that goes and p!$$3$ herself.  If I can make it through OC without making too big of a fool of myself then I will be grateful.  I plan on keeping my eyes down when they ask for volunteers for the taser...

Unless no one wants to "man up" and then I guess I would step up and spend each of those long five seconds praying that I don't mess...

I've been tazed, and to be totally honest its no big deal. Yes, it hurts like a bear!! I may have even screamed like a little girl. But as soon as the cycle is over and the tazer stops, it's all over. No after effect, no sorenss or weakness (unless you fall flat on your face - that may hurt a little).

Go for it. It's a ride you won't forget :)

IT JUST DEPENDS. FEDERAL LAW SAYS THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TAKE THE COARSE. HOWEVER, THE STATE THAT YOU LIVE IN MAY REQUIRE YOU TO GET TAZED. AND IF YOU HAVE TO IT'S NO BIG DEAL. YOU GET TAZED, YOU FALL DOWN IN PAIN, AND THEN IT'S OVER. NO SIDE EFFECTS AT ALL.

With the Taser, when it's over, it's over.  No after effects,  With Capstun it hurts for hours.  And don't even go to the bathroom after rubbing your face.  You will be sorry.

Being tased is like sticking your finger in a wall socket. Five seconds and it's done. OC is just nasty!!!

We joke about getting a full face spray at our department before getting to carry it. "Man are we going to get shot with the 40s too?" OC/CS is nasty and takes hours to recover depending on the person. Give me a few second ride. I took at 240 volt hit, it can't be much worse.

I wish we could carry tazers, never heard of them not taking someone down. I have sprayed several people with Freeze +P with little or no results.

I have had them fail on suspects. Fought a guy once that was tazed multiple times, with no real affect. When he got tazed by two tazers at the same time (not planned, just worked out that way), it took the fight out of him.

I would rather be OC sprayed and tased in front of a bunch of people I may never see again and not the ones I work with (cruel bunch they are!).  LOL  I'll take the tasing any day because it doesn't revisit you like OC does after a shower for a day or two!  ugh  Tasing lasts a few seconds and is done!

Tasers fail more than you know! I've seen them miss, only one connect, and not affect the suspect. Its just like any other tool on the belt, its does not work on everyone 100% of the time.

Why?  Because it, CN, CS gas and OC pepper spray training and exposure, is REQUIRED as part of academy training.  I will be the first one to say that I did not like getting OC'd or sucking in CN or CS gas in the academy.  That said, there is a purpose for it.  That purpose would be the incident where OC (pepper spray), CN or CS gas are deployed.  You must know what it is and what it feels like to be able to work through it effectively and not become a liability by being disabled by it.  Likewise, when you have to testify in court as to why you used it on a suspect or suspects, you can effectively testify that while it hurts or is otherwise uncomfortable, its effects are temporary.  Getting tazed is the same.  You find out what it is all about, including going for the ride and can testify that you did not die from the experience.

Yes we need to experence being sprayed or tazed to know what it is like and be able to overcome it in the field & in court be able to articulate it's use. No one likes having to go through it to carry it, you just suck it up as part of training. Honestly I have never been asked in court why I sprayed a suspect of questioned about me being sprayed.

Skoolcop, thanks, but no need to clarify to me that OC and taser exposures are a required part of academy training!  Mine was a tongue-in-cheek answer to the thread's topic since it segued into 'Name Your Pain.'  I pick short pain versus long pain.  lol

Out here in California we chile-eaters have a rough idea of capsicum run amok.  Ask anyone whose ever chopped habaneros then rubbed their eyes.  Or kissed their honey.  The deputies that led the jail tour showed us those itty-bitty orange pellets.  Now THAT'S concentrate!  I'm SKEERT a dat!

As for tasing...I got tricked into touching a sheep fence once. Quite a reality check. Tazing looks like a sheep fence blanket.

TNDEPUTY, the deputies who led our tour of our local jail discussed OC spray use in correctional facilities, along with riot gear use, etc. They stressed the importance of prior exposure in the event officers may be exposed to  'friendly fire.'  The officer so compromised would still have to make decisions and act, etc. - especially in a prison riot situation.

I also figured the exposure in LE training might have something to do with informing a decision on when to use either of these two methods on the streets.

I didn't realize an additional purpose was to inform testimony as an expert witness for the State.  I figured a general understanding would be sufficient, but I see where expert testimony based upon experience makes the diff in a court of law.  Thanks for the perspective.
