Was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about what your day/night is like on the job? - Pretty vague question, I know, but because I realize the job is pretty atypical, I can't be very specific. :P

Not really sure what you're asking but you never know what to expect in this line of work. There's a lot of boredom and lots of paperwork. In small depts like mine you are often dealing with the same folks over and over again which can be dangerous because it's easy to get complacent.  You may be he;ping little-old ladies cross the street one minute and the next thing ya know you're fighting for your life with a violent felon. There's just no way to predict how your day is going to be and the duties can vary dramatically depending on your agency and the area in which you work.

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. Thanks for the response. I'm just generally looking for whatever answer comes to mind when someone reads that question, lol.  I'm trying to get a ridealong so I can see things more first hand, so I figure I'd try it the internet way until then.

I also depends on what kind of cop youre asking...a patrol officer from a major city/county will have one thing to say, a patrol officer from a small town will have something to say, an arson investigator will have his own brand of stories, narcotics tact team cop will have a different story, a warrants cop another type, a K9 cop who is on an on call SRT unit will have his, an ICE agent will have a different story, a Dental Boardmember (peace officers in Texas) will have theirs...and on and on....

Like PSD said it can vary.  In Illinois you can be a City/Village Police Patrol Officer, a County Deputy, a State Trooper, or an Illinois Department of Corrections Officer.  There are other forms of LE like Forest Preserve or Park Dist. Police, Secretary of State Police, Railroad Police, Aviation Police, College or University Police, and a few more.  In each Agency, they are broken up into different units, including multi-jurisdictional units.

Some units are investigative only, some public safety.  Some are even cross-trained as Firefighters, EMTs, or Paramedics.  Scheduling is also different.

Asking someone how their day was is different from Officer to Officer.  I haven't even touched on Federal jobs either.

If there's a way to join a Police Department's Citizen's Police Academy, it would let you know what your local PD go through on a day to day basis.
