Personal cell phone usage

Posted 2 months ago Hey gang, I need input here. My Head Dispatcher is trying to create a personal cell phone usage policy. Right now the dispatchers are technically allowed to have and use their personal cell phones for calls, texting, internet, etc. between official calls. Many of them use the "I need it for emergency calls from school/home/family" etc. Well, if you work for a 911 center.... what number is easier to dial? Of course the big fear here is that someone may "leak" confidential information.
Anyway, do any of you have such a policy that you can share?
Thanks in advance!
Sean

| Posted 2 months ago Well I assume you have more phone lines then 911 coming into your center that a family member can call up on. So that's a poor excuse for them to use. We do not allow cell phones on in the center unless they are on airplane mode and cannot send/receive calls and texts. If not then they are to be left in their locker. You can check it on your break. Violation of this policy follows the same progressive discipine as anything else.
Someone once told me that time is a predator that stalks us all our lives. But maybe time is also a companion who goes with us on our journey, and reminds us to cherish the moments of our lives because they will never come again. |

| Posted 2 months ago As a low level supervisor, I don't have a problem with it, as long as it doesn't get in ther way of your work. If it starts becoming a problem (as it has in some cases on the regular phones) then we'll have a "chat". If it stays a problem, then we'll have to start the paper trail. But, I hate to do that because the higher ups percieve it as huge problem and then it screws it up for everybody. Here it really depends on what the higher ups moods are. When we were still part of the Sheriff's dept it was on again, off again, at one point it was forbidden to even be in posession of a cell phone in the building (if you were a dispatcher....the secretaries, jailers, deputy's, the janitor were all exempt, of course). Now we work for emergency management, and that has been relaxed some. But I have a few that I can see are gonna be a problem, so it may be "that" time again...... |

| Posted about 1 month ago We're allowed to use ours, as long as it doesn't interfere with what we're SUPPOSED to be doing. If you're still effectively taking calls and dispatching and your validations and whatnot are taken care of, then its not a big deal. Although, should someone's productivity start slipping because of it, action would have to be taken. I mean...people's lives depend on us sometimes. That's not something to mess around with. An imagination was given to man to compensate for what he is not...

| Posted about 1 month ago THE USE OF CELLPHONES IN A COMM CTR BY THEIR DISPATCHERS IS A WASTE OF COMM CTR'S TIME. THEY DO GET IN THE WAY OF THE OTHER MILLION THINGS WE HAVE TO DO IN THE CENTER! DISPATCHERS FIND THAT THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO DO DAILY TASKS AND CELLS DISTRACT SOMETIMES EVEN THE BEST DISPATCHERS. THERE IS NOTHING MORE ANNOYING THAN TO BE TEACHING SOMEONE THE ROPES AND THEY GRAB FOR THEIR CELLPHONE BECAUSE ANOTHER ONE OF THE THOUSAND TEXTS IS COMING THRU. IT IS WRITTEN IN OUR POLICY THAT THEY (CELLPHONES) MAY NOT BE USED WHILE ON DUTY BUT THE POLICY HASN'T HELD IN THE DISIPLINE SO FAR, WHEN "HIGHER-UPS" FINALLY DECIDE TO ENFORCE POLICY IT WILL BE ROUGH ON EVERYBODY BECAUSE WE'VE LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT FOR SO LONG... |

| Posted 29 days ago When I was a director, I disallowed usage of cell phones in the center. There were 3 reasons; 1) Some cell phones interfere with Radio transmissions. For us it was the Nextel phones. The radio guy said it had to do with the positions of the company's cell towers more so than the actual service. 2) There is no way to "tape record" cell phone calls and there was an allegation that a dispatcher disclosed address information to a family member for billing purposes. 3) Sensitive information could be disclosed and again, no way to prove it as not, if the only phones available are tape recroded. 4) THe obvious distraction to their job. They can be reached in case of an emergency using the hard line phones. There is no legitimate reason to have the cell phone in the center. |

| Posted 28 days ago Why not go to work to work and leave your cell phone in your locker or vehicle. Cell phones have given people an over inflated sense of importance. No call or text message is that important. Home emergency they can call your work number. I agree with MsVanDien. |

We have no policy currently but need one. Cell phones are being abused and when that happens it is the LEO that suffers. Dispatchers are our lifelines especially for those of us who work alone with no back up. If the supervisors can keep control of the situation and see that it is not a common occurence, and only in emergency situations it should not be an issue. In our field of work family needs to understand the importance of having our dispatcher's attention where it needs to be. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal. |

| Posted 7 days ago I don't think that cell phones should be banned, but I do believe they should be used with discretion. I use my phone at work. However, I do not use my phone when I am on a call, taking a call, or while anyone is in the room, etc. We did some in-house training a few weeks ago and one of our Dispatchers was texting the entire time. However, she does that while she's working too. She's constantly on her phone while she's working and we know that she gives out information, but we can't prove it. There are people like this that make everything hard on others who use their phones with respect and discretion. If we didn't have our phones, the internet, or tv...it would be painfully long hours, because we are not a busy department. Most people have enough common sense to know when using their phone is appropriate, but as I said, those who don't make everyone else look bad. As far as not allowing cell phones because they can not be recorded...talk about invasion of privacy! LOL |
