Hey All! I am a dispatcher for an agency that has about 20 some odd dispatchers on staff. I am in charge or researching "pagers" for the dispatchers. Right now what happens is if someone calls in for a shift the supervisors and/or person in charge that shift start texting everyone telling them there is a shift open. We all think it would be easier if they could just type from the command line in Cad that such and such shift is open and call it good. My  question to all of you is do any of you have Pagers in your center? Where did you get them? How much did they cost? What CAD system do you run off them? How do they work for you guys? Etc. Any and ALL advise is needed as I am trying to get as much information as possible to help out. I can tell you my system we use is Spillman. You can email me or just respond to this thread. Hey there...my department does not use a paging system for dispatchers...but we use a paging system for our SWAT guys. We use Motorola pagers. Also, you may want to contact the Salem, Virginia dispatch center. They page their fire department members when there is an open shift. You can PM me and I can give you their direct number. Yep the Still Make Pagers Emergency Management Uses them As well As others there just now going to mass text messages to your phones but still in the Works, as a Police Officer we used them back in the 80's but with Cell phones not much use for them Now Days

We have an on call sheet, its a monthly calander and people sign up to be on call. Each of us signs up for 3 days a month and that covers it. You can sign up for day or night ( 12 hour shifts). If no one is on call, rare, we just call people on the shift thats off and get a volunteer. If that doesnt work someone stays over and someone comes in early.

I would use existing cell phones.  Pagers are archaic.  On the rare occasion that someone doesn't own a cell phone the department can issue one if it's going to be mandatory.


Someone once told me that time is a predator that stalks us all our lives. But maybe time is also a companion who goes with us on our journey, and reminds us to cherish the moments of our lives because they will never come again.

Our agency has issued pagers to all of the dispatchers, however, it seems that most people do not carry them or even have a good battery in them since there is nothing written in the SOP or P&P about carrying the pager.  There are a few of us that carry them all the time especially if we are on the Life Track team but I find that the Supervisors always seem to call your personal cell phone first.


 


We currently have USAMobility pagers and these are the same pagers that are issued to our Officers as well.

We used to have pagers for all members of the Department.  They did away with them because of the cost, no one would answer them, and the issue of OT (being on call 24/7).  No one wanted to be required to answer the page on Holidays or other occasions.  


The only Department regulated communications we have are Nextels.  They are issued to Supervisors (Officer and Civilian) and have been networked into the Will Co. 911 for emergency call outs (SWAT, Tactical Dispatchers, Negotiators).  


Depending on how big your PD is, and if an agreement can be made with all about SOPs, they can work.  It would be easier to have a call out list of people willing to come in if needed.

Our agency uses Motorola Alpha-Numeric pagers for that and for Severe Weather alerts.  They work pretty well, as we can page from many places and all pagers at once.  There are several places that still carry pagers and their service.  Some cell places have them.

My agency doesnt use pagers at all. We have our radio's and every officer is issued a cell phone.

I thought I was the only person still in the 1980's. I carry a pager only because I don't like cell phones.

 as a supervisor I carry a pager.....but it never goes off, they always call my cell phone......BUT I had better be carrying that pager just in case someone decides to screw with me and actually send me a page....heck, Im not even sure it works.

when i first started with my department i was issued a pager.  the only time it ever went off was if someone had a birth or death in the family.  my supervisor always contacted us via cell phone if she needed us.  as for how we worked on call, we did it on a schedule.  each month a calendar was posted with who worked on call for what day.  if your name was down and someone called in then it was mandatory that you come to work.  if the on call person was already mandated to work and someone else called in then it went on a volunteer basis.
