I have not posted on this site before so I will introduce myself. I am Alan Guderjahn aka gudercop. I live in NE Montana and am a Deputy Sheriff in a Dept of 7 Officers and 5 Reserve Deputies. I have two children and a loving wife.

My daughter has a son named Gavin Alan Gwynn that has a congentital heart defect. Gavin has had 4 surgeries in his 5 years of life and is scheduled to have the 5th today at 0700 at the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto CA. This is a great facillity and is adjacent to the Standford Medical Center and University. Gavin is my hero and is an inspiration to anyone who meets him. I would appreciate any prayers that you could spare for the surgeons to have a steady hand and for God to guide them. Also a prayer that God will give Gavin a speedy recovery so he can come get back home as quick as possible. God is great and I believe that he will keep my grandson safe and bring him back home to Malta. If for some reason God takes Gavin away then I guess He needed Gavin to be with Him to help out in Heaven and we will just have to share our little hero with God.

Here is a little essay that I wrote while waiting for Gavin after his last surgery a year ago.

TEAR STAINED FACES AND A HEAVY HEART, OUR CHILDREN ARE HURT. MAKE THEM BETTER AND OUR FAMILIES WHOLE. THE DOCTORS SAY ANOTHER SURGERY IS SOON TO COME. WE ONLY WANT TO HOLD OUR DAUGHTERS AND OUR SONS. THE SKY MATCHES OUR MOODS ONE MINUTE CLEAR THE NEXT CLOUDY.

OUR LITTLE ONES ARE SO,SO STRONG, THEY HOLD A POWER AND STRENGTH WE CAN NEVER KNOW. GOD IS WITH US AND WITH THEM. IF HE TAKES ONE HE WILL GIVE ANOTHER. MAYBE NOT TO US BUT TO A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER. GOD GAVE US HIS SON AND WE TOOK HIM AWAY. GOD GAVE ALL OF US EACH OTHER AND SOMETIMES WE LEAVE. THATS OKAY AS WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN ON THE OTHER SIDE. NO MORE PAIN NO MORE HURT, NO MORE NEEDLES OR TAPE. ONLY LOVE AND PEACE WILL SURROUND US WHEN WE LEAVE THIS EARTH.

I HOPE AND PRAY THAT I WILL SEE EACH AND EVERY CHILD THAT HAS DIED IN FULL AND UNBROKEN BODIES. RUNNING, PLAYING AND LAUGHING. NO MORE CANCER-NO BAD HEARTS OR SICKNESS. TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD'S HOLY POWER AND BEAUTY ALIVE WITH HIM.

TEAR STAINED FACES AND HEAVY HEARTS FURTIVE GLANCES AT EACH OTHER IN PASSING. FEELING OUR PAIN AND SEEING YOURS. THIS IS THE LIFE OF A FAMILY MEMBER IN THE PEDIATRIC ICU.

PARENTS ARE HURTING, GRANDPARENTS TOO. BOWED HEADS AND PRAYERS ON OUR LIPS. PLEASE GOD MAKE MY CHILD WHOLE. DON'T TAKE THEM AWAY I'M NOT READY YET. TAKE ME AND LEAVE THEM TO GROW. I LIVED MY LIFE AND THEY HAVE NOT. I LOVE MY CHILD AND NEED THEM TO STAY. PLEASE GOD MAKE DEATH GO AWAY.

I wrote this while sitting in the waiting room of the hospital waiting for the news of Gavin during his last surgery. I know it is a little disjointed but if you hav eever been there you will understand. Your thoughts are jumbled as you wait for news of the surgery and how your child is doing. Thank you for taking the time to read this and May God Bless you and your families. May your children grow and be safe.

Gavin is doing good just has to eat. The effusion is drying up as they are giving him 3 different dieuretcs. Other than that he is doing good. He has never been a big eater (not like Gpa). BUt if Gavin continues to get stronger and they can pull the chest tubes then he can come home early next week. Thanks for the support. God bless you all!!!!!!!!!

No problem Sherry, he needs to start eating as they are taking a lot of fluid out of him and when he eats they geve lasic and then he vomits. They finally agreed to back off the lasic and them he might be able to eat and keep food and drink down. Thanks for the prayers and thoughts.

UPDATE................UPDATE ..............................UPDATE

Gavin is out of the hospital as of 08-13-09. He got to go to the San Franciso 49ers game Friday eveing but did not stay long as he got sick. Ate to much and threw up. Sorry for the graphics. He went in today for a check up and they found out that he has some fluid in his chest cavity and they are hoping that it will absolve itself with medication and exercise. Not much fluid but if it does not stay the same or go down then he will have to be admitted and a chest tupe reinserted. We are asking for prayers again that he will not have to go back into the hospital. Thank you for your prayers in the past as they did help and he made a remarkable recovery. Gavin was discharged from the Hospital after 9 days post op. This is unheard of for this procedure. The earliest that has ever been discharged was 10 days. The Doctors and the Nurses at Lucille Packard Childrens Hospital are the best and are giving my family the royal treatment. Please pray for them as they have a tough job as they see and treat the sickest of children. They also have to deal with the unfortunate incidences of untimely deaths in these little children. Thats all for now stay safe and God bless. gudercop---------Gavin's Grandpa.

Good news he is out of the hospital and will continue to pray for that fluid to resolve.  He is one strong little warrior and he has a very strong grandpa on his side encouraging him.  Take care of yourself too, Alan.

I'm hoping Guder doesn't mind my updating you all on his behalf: Gavin was headed back to the hospital in CA as of yesterday due to a blood clot in an aorta. I haven't heard anything since they landed in CA last evening. Gavin's mom was with him, and Guder's wife was flying there this morning. Please continue to pray for them all, including Gavin's little brother Henry (age 2) as it is tough on him having Mom & big brother gone so much.

Hang in there Guder-family, we all love you and are praying for you!!

Thank you for the kind words and prayers. Gavin is back in California and is in ICU. There is chest drainage and a blood clot in his aorta. The Docs are keeping an eye on it and making a plan to take care of it. Gavin is stable and is in good spirits. He was doing knock knock jokes with the tech doing the echo cardiogram. He also ordered Steak off the menu for supper. (eatting better than I am) LOL We will find out more in the next few hours and days and will keep you all posted. Take care and God bless each and everyone of you.
