The president should have apologized to Sgt. Crowley for his words and Gates should have apologized for being an ass that night. Sgt. Crowley was doing his job and did not need to apologize to anyone. I believe he acted appropriately and professionally.

I am sick and tired of the idea that we as police officers have to tolerate people publicly, and loudly berating us and calling us names. There used to be, and should still be, a level of implied respect for the police. The more we let people run over us, the further they are going to push it.

I firmly believe the President should publicly apologize for his comments. He even started the comment off with "I don't know all the facts, but...". Well, if you don't know all the facts, don't say anything!!

I can't weigh in on this because I think apologies were due AND it is time to move on.

Did anyone notice how the playing field was leveled yesterday...Two on one until Biden was used as a throw-down. I'm sick of the whole deal the Sgt. made the right decision from a  "Police Prospective ', it was all down hill from the time he stepped on Gate's property, This was never going to be a win / win situation. Gates will never change there is too much bagage in his past. Obama again let his guard down or should I say the "TELEPROMPTER". Obama can't think on his feet and would have never been able to act in a professional manor if he were faced with the same fierce approach by Gates. This is not a race thing it is an example of the lack of respect for all police and their authority by a few people from all walks of life and from all ethnic groups. The laws that govern each and every one of us are truly printed in Black and White but as we all know are shrouded in Gray, discretion is the tool always questioned by the ill informed. If an apology has to be sought out it is never really an apology anyway.  The Sgt. can go home and look into the mirror and know he was right. That can't be said for the others involved. The badge remained untarnished in this situation.

Nobama owes an apology to Sgt. Crowley, the Cambridge PD, and all LE professionals he insulted!  Prof. Gates is just an old bitter dumba$$, nobody expects much from him.

Don't spend too much time worrying about this poll, some folks on here enjoy being antagonistic, and with the anonymity of the poll, it's the perfect venue. They'll post in some other thread, and we'll know the trolls by their own words.

As I said in a previous (one of many) this has been beaten to a pulp. DC748 said it well, the badge remains untarnished. Which is unusual considering the media circus that ensued over this. Maybe Obama ought to weigh in on ever arrest in America, then we could see what REALLY happens, instead of the media circus spewing their little liberal spin on everything.

I think personally that it was a good idea for Sgt. Crawley to attend this little meeting and have a beer. It showed that he was firm enough in his position to not back down from his stand. I believe he had nothing to apologize for and that Obama and Gates both owe a huge apology to the police for their actions. Hopefully Obama will think next time before he goes and opens his mouth. Thats really the only opinions I have on the matter.

I hope it was at least good quality beer . All that set aside, I believe President Obama and Professor Gates owed Sgt Crowley a big apology. Professor Gates should be thanking Sgt Crowley for protecting his home. President Obama on the other hand just keeps digging himself in deeper with the public. It's time to go 10-8....

While I think that Both Gates and Obama acted irrisponsibly, I dont think that they need to appologize. We as cops do our job day in and day out and get insulted, kicked, spit on, and worse. Not once have I expected a criminal (that is what Gates is) to appologize. We don't appologize for tasing, cuffing or arresting someone. I know I know....it is our JOB and we should NOT appologize. It is appropriate for those who actually acted "stupidly" (Not Crowley) to admit such. But an appology is not needed. Time to get over it folks.

And yes, I am ready for the insults. This is just my two cents. If you want to give me change...I will take it.

It's time to move on people. None of us were there so we have no idea what happened. In my opinion all parties acted irresponsibly from the officer to the President to Mr. Gates. I have been insulted on several occassions and never pouted because I didn't get an apology. As police officers we learn to accept certain things when we accept a badge and insults are one of those things. If you don't have tough skin its time to get out. Its time to live and let go. MOVE ON!

Lol...we DO have an idea of what happened! And unlike the POTUS....we actually have facts to base our opinions off of....

Now you can ignore the facts all you want and hide behind the ''we weren't there'' crap...but the end result will be the same.

Apologies from Obama and Gates were in order. We all know, however, that  was never going to happen.

It is time to move on. But let's not forget the right and wrong of this situation!

I'm glad you were there and I appreciate your insight on something you witnessed personally (NOT) But if it makes you feel better believe what you like. I haven't seen any video of this incident only still photos so if you are aware of something the rest of us are not then please, show it since you were there.

pcooper has described everything perfectly. This is my fear as well. A day where being a police officer, where no respect is shown, and the race card is pulled everytime. We have to put our foot down somewhere.

Haha...wow. I did not say I WAS there....however...I do know that I have enough research skills and common sense to get the big picture of what happened.

And in my opinion, apologies were due.

Now if you disagree with me....fine whatever...I don't really care.

But like I said....the apologies ARE NOT going to take place therefore it is time to move on.

Feel free to do so.

I think all the one post wonders should apologize for not going into the intro thread and posting an intro thread so the rest of us can have some inclination to who joined in on a particular discussion.

I'll apologize for harping on the lack of intro posts.  I try not to harp on it often.  With the many discussions of this incident I've seen many 1st posts.  I do wonder if if these people do or would walk into a group of people discussing something and jump right in the middle of the conversation w/o saying 'Hello I'm.....' and w/o knowing who any of those who are participating in said discussion.  OK so this is the Internet and more of a temptation to put your 2 cents in, but at least have some Internet manners, please.

Apologies needed by the two dumb asses, Crowley was just doing his job.  The other two just made his job more difficult.  Truly amazing how  "experts" never to have apologize for anything.  Even though their "expertise" is being an ass.

obama needs to apologize not only to sgt. crowley, but to all law enforcement officers and to the minorities across america for opening his mouth about something that he did not know much about and stirring up more racial tensions between police and minorities. the problems that exist between police and minorities will never get better as long as we have people like obama and gates keeping it stirred up.

Gates is an elite academic snob. If he weren't so beligerent with the officers and identified himself right away, we never would have heard about this incident. But, since he played the race card and got his buddy Obama involved in a local police issue, it became "an issue."

I've worked in both L.E. and academic environments and believe me, this had nothing to do with race and everything to do with elitism.
