How many of you have pulled someone over, and in fact the driver was deaf. How did you handle the situation, and what did you learn from it?

A few months ago I did pull over a male subject that was hearing impaired. I had to do alot of writting and he would respond by writing back. The bad part was he was suspended so I had to take him to jail. That took a while to explain. He was very cooperative though.

I'm not an officer, but I grew up around an uncle who is deaf. Sometimes they have learned to read your
lips as you talk. So you would need to have eye contact and move your lips while talking. You have to make
a conscious effort to move your lips while talk making sure you form all words. Ask if they can understand or
read lips. If not writting is the best. Unless you learn sign lang.

I learned sign language, I did one year of it at college to meet foreign language requirement, and it is the easiet language to learn. First, we did have to interact with deaf people from the community, but the professor would bring deaf people in class for us. That was for any of us who couldn't get out to meet deaf people. It was a great learning experience. It has been 1 yr out of class and I can still sign, it's very easy. It only takes 5 minutes to learn the alphabet. after that you just have learn how to do sentences. You have to throw english language out. deaf people do not sign english exact. If you want examples let me know. Like lepage said, "reading lips is a big plus." No I'm not an officer yet, waiting on my appliciations I have in.

Yes, the professor I had did teach us to sign all the different curse/cuss words. So we would not accidently sign them. But they are great to know.

The job I currently have now involves public interaction. We had a male and female who were hearing impaired as well as speech challenged. They chose to write down what they wanted to say, rather than just read our lips.

People who know sign language, are few and far between these days.
I pictured everyone saying that people who were hearing impared, would not pull over, because they couldent hear you.

if you must make an arrest of anyone that dose not speak the language or speak at all, i have found shaking my handcuffs at them with a stern look pretty much says it all in every language.

Seems it works to make them remember they actually do speak english too ODIN. As far as communicating wirth the hearing impaired or deaf, a note pad usually works well....unless you get the illegal alien who can't hear either...then it's back to ODIN's idea.
