Anybody ever take note of how many Officers,Deputys, corrections Officers are vets. The best cops simply ARE vets. Most are conservative, love God,country, state county and city and believe in strong character and moral values. They're the first to have a flag pole on their house and wear a flag pin  and volunteer for any worthwhile project that presents itself.

I agree that there a lot of people in law enforcement that have served the nation in the armed forces.  If they have seen action, it seen that they are more calm in the face of dangerous situations.  That, I believe, is because they have been there before.

When people ask where I live and I tell them they most say "Oh yea, the house with the big flag flying above it".  My flag is close to 60 feet in the air.

Excellent post, and I for one appreciate it. I fit into that category, having retired from the Military.

Shock, personally I think you'll make a pretty good cop, even though you were a Marine (sorry, Matt. Couldn't resist!)

I agree that it is an excellent post, as I was also in the armed forces; as I was in the Navy from 1963 - 1967. Now on the other hand, 36TR, watch what you say about the Marines, they are the good guys.  I know as I worked right along with them, so I know that they can pull their weight.  It's okay Shock, I got your six when 36TR is picking on you.   HEHEHEHEHE !!!!!   -ceb   ...

Well, It looks like I am on the outside, lookin' in.

My landlord won't let me have a big flag or flag pole,But I do have a small flag atached to my mailbox-post,And I love to see it wave. I take it in each evening,And fly it proudly every day.I spent 21 years in the militaryand would love to serve in law enforcement. Unfortunately,Like many vets, My legs have service-related issues and don't work like they should. I am trying to get back the proper use of my legs,so that I can maybe go into law-enforcement,(At 52 years young!), But if not, I can still root for the good guys and know that I had the honor of serving the finest country in the world.

I have to agree, there are many, many outstanding cops and corrections officers that have military backgrounds!

However, I will repectfully disagree that having that type of background makes them the best! There are just as many great officers that do not have a military background!

It's what's inside that makes or breaks the officer! Military or not!

ka9opr, I agree they can pull their weight and they have their place. And since I respect you, I won't start on the Navy jokes. I'm glad you have Shock's 6, but seeing how he is still wet behind the ears, He'll need someone on his 3 and 9, too.   (Luv ya, Matt)

The military instills the "service before self" attitude. Previous to my military career, I could care less about anyone but myself. The military teaches young men and women SO MANY THINGS that can never be taught in a classroom. I thank the military for all that i have learned while serving.

America is also one of very few countries where the military is volunteer only. I believe this is one of the reasons we're such a powerful force is because our men/women WANT to serve. Although we should not force military service on young men and women, it would be great to increase enlistment rates to instill the values on more young americans.

Yep.....I agree completely, but I dont think it would be to bad if we were like Isreal and made everyone serve 2 years....All these lil young punks with attitudes would have their lives turned around after 13 weeks of Marine bootcamp

Shock, thats all good in theory, but the simple fact that you REQUIRE them to be a member would violate the very sanctity of our freedoms as americans.  What makes members of the United States armed forces unique is that they WANT to be there.  Some families have traditions, School, military, college, life... some kids see it as an opportunity to finance going to college, etc.

I agree that some of our kids have turned out to be punks.  Just like when I was teen, our parants thought that rock n roll made all of us punks.  If  your really old, your parents thought those 8 tracks casets made you a punk, lol.  Each generation does not understand the next generation.  Give these punks a chance and they will suprise you.  There is always a few bad apples, those are the ones we need to squash into apple sauce, the rest of them just need a little direction to want to prepare for the rest of THEIR life as a productive member of society.

As for gang members in the military, that is simple.  The judges have started giving them defered options on first offense.  If you get arrested for what they consider minor charges, you have the option of joining the military in lou of getting your charges dropped.  Find out if thats the case, you only need to find where he enlisted from and check the court clerks office... ITS PUBLIC RECORD...
