While the focus today, tomorrow and for the next
God-knows-how-many-days will be the death of a pop culture icon; while many will mourn, wail and quite literally make fools of themselves over it and while as many will speak endlessly about it, allow me, if only for a moment, to remind us all that others have died this month; others whose lives were cut short; others who leave behind loved ones and whose families will dearly miss them; families
who'll suffer with much more dignity and honor than we'll be exposed to on the tube in the coming days.

Yes... it's true... we've suffered a great loss... but forgive me while I tell you that I'm not talking about the king of pop music, although he will be missed. These in my estimation are the true Icons of our culture!

These American military members died in Iraq this month:

Sergeant Justin J. Duffy
Specialist Christopher M. Kurth
Specialist Charles D. Parrish
Lance Corporal Robert D. Ulmer
Staff Sergeant Edmond L. Lo
Sergeant Joshua W. Soto
Captain Kafele H. Sims
Specialist Chancellor A. Keesling

And these members of our U.S. Armed Forces died in Afghanistan this
month:

Sergeant Jon es, Ricky D.
Specialist Munguia Rivas, Rodrigo A.
Command Master Chief Petty Officer Garber, Jeffrey J.
1st Sergeant Blair, John D.
Sergeant Smith, Paul G.
Staff Sergeant Melton, Joshua
Sergeant 1st Class Dupont, Kevin A.
Specialist O'Neill, Jon athan C.
Chief Warrant Officer Rich ardson Jr., Ricky L.
Specialist Silva, Eduardo S.
Lance Corporal Whittle, Joshua R.
Major Barnes, Rocco M.
Major Jenrette, Kevin M.
Staff Sergeant Beale, John C.
Specialist Jordan, Jeffrey W.
Specialist Griemel, Jarrett P.
Specialist Hernandez I, Roberto A.
Sergeant Obakrairur, Jasper K.
Staff Sergeant Hall, Jeffrey A.
Private 1st Class Ogden, Matthew D.
Private 1st Class Wilson, Matthew W.

Let's remember and honor this day those whose deaths are truly
impacting.

God rest them and God comfort their loved ones they've left behind.

And may God use their deaths to remind us all of the shortness of
our days.

Thanks to FIREPROTOM!  He gives us a relavent point to consider. And, he's right ya know. People tend to lament the passing of a pop icon who they don't even know (really) and don't stop very often to thank those that protect them from harm.

I suppose, poeple need the "public morphine" of pop icons to dull the pain of an existance they hardly understand. They would if they were at where those warriors stood.

This subject gets my blood boiling.   A little pervert that some people think can sing and dance gets all this attention while the real heros bleed.

Big thumbs up from me! To me, the men and women serving in the military and the men and women in law enforcement are the ones I look up to and idolize, not this former pop star and pedophile.

Amen!  Condolences to all of our military families who have lost a loved one or a friend.  And let's not forget our LEO's that have been lost.  I mourn the passing of all of these men and women.  They are the true heroes of the world.  They are the ones whose names should be on everybody's lips and everybody's minds.  May they all rest in peace and may we always remember what they gave up for us.

Our military men and women barely get a mention...maybe in passing or just as a number.  Our LE and FF's get nothing unless it's something like what happened in Oakland or 9/11.  They might get a short headline in the local paper or on the local news.  The blame for that lies partly on the media for pandering to scandal and a pop-culture brainwashed by those who hold themselves up as some kind of icon or second coming.  But a big part lies squarely on the shoulders of the general public for not standing up on the table and SCREAMING about the fact that we as a population are not paying attention instead of shrugging our shoulders, looking the other way, and saying "too bad" as we flip the channel to find another sex, drugs, and scandal laden report that's more "interesting".  Just my opinion.

The Media has fought for years to be able to photograph and cover the return of our glorious military dead, and now that they are able to do so they basically ignore those returning Heroes in order to give massive coverage to the death and funeral of an individual like Michael Jackson.  The coverage of this "King of Pop" has reached the point of inducing nausea, even our deceased Presidents do not receive this kind of attention.  I ,for one, will be glad when he is buried and we can all get on with our lives.

Far too often we are driven to distraction by the Media's coverage of "Pseudo-Celelbrity Deaths" (Anna Nichole Smith for example) while ignoring the passing of the many members of our Armed Services who sacrifice their time, effort, and far too often their lives for us in far off desolate corners of the world.  The priorities of far too many people in this country are askew and twisted.  We need to show our support and appreciation to the fallen, their families and fellow military members of the fallen heroes on a daily basis and not let the Media hijack our priorities with drivel like the Jackson Family Circus.

Amen to that, I think Congressman King put it in the proper perspective.

I remember (vaguely) something else that happened during 9/11. Remember the space shuttle? IT exploded at the same time we were trying to recover from 9/11. The astronauts hardly got a mention. I think they should be added to the hero list

Thanks FIREPROTOM for posting and for thinking of and remembering what so many people tend to ignore. I am not a fan of Michael Jackson because of the things he has been accused of. He did make big strives in music but why should he get all this attention he is getting? Especially when the real heros go without mention, people who give their lives so that people like Michael, people like us, may live.

I've thought some about the topic and I hold to my earlier post that too many people lament Mr. Jackson's death while not really knowing him at all. Then there is the stuff about his addictions and sleeping with children and all w the accusations that flew around.

Here is the observation: it was the media and public that built the icon himself and it was the same dynamic that persecuted him in public. Whether he did those things are not I'll never be sure. It never went to trial. But, once the accusations were flying about the media whipped the winds of outrage. And I suppose it doesn't matter much. Mr. Jackson has now only his maker to face. Guilty of pedophillia or a really misguided child-like person w some profound mental issues seem the only choices to place Mr. Jackson save one: just dead.  Goodbye Mr. Jackson.
