Pompey, NY -- An off-duty trooper was killed this morning after being hit by a car while riding a bike in Pompey, state police said.

Trooper John B. Gorke, 47, of Manlius, was riding with a friend westbound on Route 20 at 8:36 a.m. when he was struck in the rear by a Chevrolet Impala driven by Charles W. Brewer, 20, of Cohocton, Steuben County, said Capt. Jeffrey Raub.

Brewer swerved to pass the first bicyclist, David Schnall, 44, of Fayetteville, before overcorrecting, hitting the grass and then crashing into Gorke's bike, about 50 yards ahead, Raub said. The crash happened about a hundred yards from Pompey Center Road. The shoulder turns into a right turn lane at the point where Gorke was hit

Gorke was a 19-year veteran who worked with the Thruway barracks in Syracuse. He and Schnall often rode their bikes for exercise before Gorke reported for work, said Trooper Jack Keller.

Gorke is survived by his wife and three children, Raub said.

No tickets have been issued, but the investigation is continuing.

"People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. "

Thanks Jkaz, I received the notify from the Troopers last night and was going to post the notify, but got interrupted and didn't get to come back until today.

RIP Trooper, you, your family including your family of grey riders are in my thoughts and prayers.
