Hiring Prejudice (Non AA or EOE)

Posted 4 months ago I'm not referring to Affirmative Action complaints or EOE. I have applied to numerous Illinois Police departments and have noticed a particular trend. The overwhelming preference to hire people with Criminal Justice degrees and Military experience. Granted, they do provide a step up from the rest of applicants. But let me explain. I have a Masters and decent resume, ace all the tests (dominate the PT), and prepared myself for HARD questions at oral interview. The only oral boards that were positive to my potential consisted of Police and Firemen. However, that was only 20% of the interview I've had. The rest were made of City Boards: elected individuals who seemed to never have served in military or law enforcement. That 80% was fairly critical of my lack of CJ degree or Military experience. Is this a matter of City Officials vs. Experience Officers?

| Posted 4 months ago my opnion is that city officials can shove it...... when it comes to LE, i have always been told to major in something other then CJ, (if you get hurt or something happens you have something else to fall back on) and minor in CJ..... the city should be happy with you for the fact that you have a masters in something other the CJ... you would be more well rounded canident. (nothing wrong with CJ diplomas) CITY OFFICIALS:::: if you have no LE experience then you have no right in telling LE how to, where to, and what to do..(pretaning to city people) i have no problems with the public comissions... AS LONG AS THEY GO THROUGH AN ACADEMY AND DO LE WORK AS WELL ge t dirty, make arrests, deal with all the BS that TRUE LE OFFICERS DEAL WITH....but that will never happen. pre-reqs though, a lot of depts want that education. sucks sometimes, cause you may have life experience with a certian edcutation, but not the education they want you to have.... good luck and appy for depts all over the place... some one would be glad to have you. |

| Posted 4 months ago Having a Masters in another field other than LE can also be looked on as a negative (the old "overqualified"). Employers think you will move on to another career after the Agency had invested much time and $$$ in training and equiping you. Towns, Cities, Counties (etc.) do not like hiring people who they think may leave for bigger and better things (bigger Department, Fed job, other LE field). Keep applying, someone will definatelly hire you if you have those skills. Good luck. Just because you trained for something, doesn't mean you're prepared for it. - Anonymous

| Posted 4 months ago Hiring process for a law enforcement officer should be done by law enforcement. Overqualified is a CYA just like Pete said the fear of hiring an individual and them moving on. Hang tight and dont let the BS cause you to give up. |
