Do we have any Mounted Officers here. I was asked if a horse reacts to CS or Pepper spray in a riot situation? Having never worked mounted Div. I can not  coment on this.  Thanks for your post's.

Yes, just as K-9's and we as officers do. But through training they learn that it wont cause serious harm and learn to work threw it, just like we did. A trust / respect relationship is a must between a handler and his K-9 or a horse and it's ridder before useing mace or gase on it the first time, which is definatly a kodak moment. LEO's remember your first time? Or Millitary people? Ha !! Well you knew deep down that the SOB of an Instructor was not going to let anything serious happen to you.

I own horses and while they do have shields that they put over their faces and ears, they would react just the same as a human which is why they NEVER use horses until the OC as completely settled down because a horse can really freak out in these situations.  Mostly horses are just called in to push the people outta there and definately not in lethal situations because the horses can seriously get hurt.

I have seen horse and rider work in gas enviornment.  It was like a well oiled machine and it fascinated me how just with the touch of heel the rider could move the horse forward, back sideways.  It all has to do with the bond between rider and horse and the trust level.
