Third shift (2230-0630) was my fav.  Number of reasons but the front running benefits for me was.  The only brass around was the Shift Lt...  The calls late at night were, for lack of a better way to describe it, more meaningful for me.  Catching a bad-guy doing a crime carried more satisfaction.  Stopping a burlary in progress, DWI enforcement, drug and/or weapons pops on traffic stops, fights/shootings and the local bars/clubs, most of the work just seemed more grunt if you know what I mean.  Majority of the time, when something came over the radio in the middle of the night, it had more substance than repeat calls to career drunks, domestic disturbances or working veh accidents out the yang when the weather was bad.  When it was slow, I always liked having the time to look for something to do.  And, for some reason, a fair amount of the work late at night lended itself to more of the serious excitement aspect of Patrol.  Late at night, working alone, you had to keep your kimshee wound tight.  But that's just me.

3rd Shift/Midnights(1930-0700 Hrs.), worked that shift for 10 years, currently just transferred to 1st Shift/Daywork(0600-1730 hrs.).  3rd Shift is a proactive shift with lots of in progress calls, Dui's, drug interdictions, and multiple crimes leading to lock ups.  A great place for real Police work.  Left 3rd shift to learn the daywork atmosphere of policework and to return to 3rd Shift, once I complete my goal to become a Sergeant.  Daywork has it's lock ups/moments, staying motivated, and continuing proactive policework.  Waiting for my opportunity to lead a squad, 3rd Shift will be the squad I volunteer for and lead.

On our 10 hours shifts its either 1600-0200 or 1800-0400.  I hate days more than anything.  I almost would rather stab myself in the thigh than work day shift.

I have really adjusted to this new shift I am on. It's called The Normal Shift, or aka Retirement Hours.

Up during the day, asleep at night.

Perfect. Mrs. Sarge appreciates it, too.

I highly recommend retirement. It's like a day off that never ends.

This is a discussion over a year old.

So, yeah, just wanted to emphasize.

Retirement = no required shift work.

Google this word and you'll get it.

FREEDOM.

Any shift that pays $$$$$$. That being said I prefer nights. We swing every 2 weeks so that stinks but is OK.

I figure this question is pointless for me, cause no matter what shift I like best, they change it every 28 days!    And yeah, I'm getting to old for that!!!!!

Same here - I'm on one of the two squads which rotates between 12-hr days and nights every 28 days. But for the guys who want more stability in their lives, they can get on one of the two permanent squads. Back when we had 8-hr shifts, I really preferred the 1500 to 2300 shift, since it stayed busy and time flew by...plus, if I wanted to do anything afterwards, I could still go out and enjoy civilian life when the shift wrapped up.
