I graduated from the police academy in Michigan in 2005, but with a poor state economy and little experience, I was unable to find a job before my certification expired. Realizing I needed more experience in life and LE, I joined the military. I have been in the military for over a year now, and out of the academy for over two. I am having trouble remembering more than the basics of my training, and was wondering what suggestions the current LEO's might have for me as to how I can brush up and maintain my training, and train more on my own until I can start my career as an LEO in two years.

Go back to school and get a degree in Criminal Justice. Chances are that you will have to repeat an academy anyhow since your certification has expired. Also, you will need to decide what is more important, your living in Michigan or your working in law enforcement. Sometimes when you cannot find work in your chosen profession where you are, you have to relocate.

Johnny,

The only thing I can tell you is if you do decide to start college you will find that your classes will keep your memory fresh. Not to mention yea I have 92 credits but it also seems that some of my classes will cover important points over and over. I could be taking a class for one subject and find that the constitution is involved in this class as well. They tend to repeat topics which in my opinion is good because after 2 and half years I may have forgot some. As for things such as the ten codes for say I would make some recipes flash cards with information that you felt was the most knowledgably i.e. need to know, or things you may be rusty on, maybe read through so many a day. Start out making 20 a day and once you feel you have enough then start going through them daily.... Just an idea.... GL

PS I am not a cop but a CJ student, I also hold a CSI cert.

I appreciate your posts and recommendations. I already hold an associates in CJ (82 credits), and plan to finish my BA while in the service, probably for Management or something like that. Also, Michigan doesn't use 10 codes, and I should only have to take a recertification class once I am out, but I might re-do the academy just to refresh totally. Thanks...
