Two Days ago, Police Link member vkosan posted the following query on the LE History site:

"Sheriff's Uniform - I am interested in the history of the sheriff uniform, how it got started in comparison to other law enforcement agencies?"

Any ideas?

I recieved the following reply from  <!-- USER AVATAR -->4426 :

In North Dakota, Sheriff's uniforms were originally grey, and later grey/black.   In 1985, uniforms were switched to dark brown pants, with a silvertan stripe (originally a 1/4 inch stripe) but most now are 1/2 inch stripes, and a silvertan shirt with dark brown epulets and pocket flaps.

I'm not exactly sure when Sheriff's uniforms became grey.    In North Daktoa peace officer annual publications it appears that uniforms were not widely worn by Sheriff's Departments in the early 60's, but by the late 60's most were wearing the grey/black combinations
