I hear alot of departments are shying away from the German Sheppard. Has anybody else heard this? and if so what type of dog Have you heard of?

Belgian Malinois are being used more often.  Labs are being used for narcotic only and bomb detection.

The primary reason more Mals are being used is mostly because of availability. The GSD is still the most used dual pupose dog in law enforcement.

 Don't give up on the GSD yet. As long as there are departments out there who are afraid to use mals (Ours), the GSD is safe as a police dog.

I have a four year old german shepard. Our city has two others. We think that the shepard is a well rounded police dog.
