Does anyone know of any documented cases of metal badges being used as a weapon, by detainees?

I have never heard of such a thing.  Why do you ask?

As in badges taken from COs or deputies and used against them?

This sounds kind silly but I've often wondered about this.....although.... my thoughts were more along the line of how often we might get scraped, cut or whatever from the hardware we're wearing on our shirts. I dont know how many times I've ripped badges, collar brass, name plates, etc., off my uniform when they got caught on the damned seatbelt....Or ya get impaled on the little pin things on the back of your brass after losing the clasps off the back!l

That's one reason I'm all for all that stuff being embroidered (sp) on the unform shirts...not to mention how much easier it is to get ready for work.

As far as being used as weapons.... probably not a problem working on the street but I can deffinitely see how inmates getting hold of this stuff would be a real problem. Dont know of any documented cases of this but I'd be shocked to find there were none.

I know I'm probably going to open up a can of worms with this, but does anybody remember your training? Even in less than favorable conditions you should never let an inmate get into a position to take something off of your shirt and use it against you. If you are ever in that situation remember the tools you have. That radio you carry also doubles as a club.

We had a Deputy tha tleft his coat with a metal bage in the back of his patrol car and made an arrest. when he got to the Jail the prisoner had taken the badge off of the coat and was holding it with the needle end sticking out between his index and middle fingers by the knucle area. he was going to strike the Deputy but he observed the needle sticking out. He disarmed the prisoner and  he now uses a cloth badge on his coat.

I just had a set rip my duty pants tonight... We have to keep ours on a chain attatched to a keeper on our duty belts and in order to enter the units without the offenders hearing me coming I (along with other Officers) stick the keys into our pockets...

Went right through the fabric while walking.

Lesson Learned...

Try wrapping the keys next time. I can't sneak up on the 'victs due to the design of our cellhouses but I can sneak up on staff (I have a lot of fun) from time to time and use rubberbands to keep my keys from jingling.

I know this might sound a little unorthodox but if you shove half of the key (however many) into the waistband of your pants this will also keep them from rattling. I used this method when working with this type of key. Small enough to fit in the waistband large enough to not lose down your pantleg. Hope this helps.

LOL we do that when we run out of room on our belt. I have a Sgt who only puts his keys at his waistband and refuses to use clips and keepers.
