Actually the dog idea, I agree with, your saving an animal from the SPCA, and animals actually seem to help CERTAIN, notice I said certain inmates open up, and get over some trust issues. Where I currently work, we have quite a few stray cats, the inmates care for them, and god help the inmate who tries to harm one, they would get the beat down of their life.

I've heard of some programs, I belive its Colorado where the inmates train helper dogs for the disabled, which is a great program, and the inmates have to earn the right to be in it. To just give any inmate a pet I do disagree with though. 1. Make them earn it   2. Show/prove to me the usefull purpose in doing so. In allowing them to have a pet it certainly should be mandated they have a job, and pay for all the pets needs, including any medical/shots.

I just saw a few weeks ago, one of our hard core inmates, take off his shoelace and play with this stray kitten while out on yard, I've never seen an inmate be mean or harmful to any of them. Our (The State) only concern is if they are rabid or sick, and when the cat population gets to big we have to trap them, which of course pisses off the inmates.

I was watching MSNBC a few weeks ago and saw an interview with an inmate who killed a fellow inmate, and microwaved his cat. He microwaved the cat because it was the only thing that other inmate cared about.

Re-habilitation does not work well in most criminals.  Punishment is what prison should be.

I wish someone could get that in HQs' thick skull.

A common saying in my jail is "this place is better than the Holiday Inn".  3 meals a day, HD-TV's,Commisary PLUS they get everything packed to them by officers. They should be out on the chain-gang busting rocks up 12 hours a day and then maybe they wouldn't be so quick to get in trouble again. Most of my inmates have it better in jail then they did on the street. Anyone else see a problem with that?

I worked in Corrections for a long time before becoming a peace officer. The problems are simple.

1. Prison and jails are not places to be feared anymore. There is no hard time, there is cable, ping pong video games, name brand sunglasses(on the commissary), organized sporting events, movie night, pizza night, weight lifting competitions, art  contest, classes, free or extremely cheap medical and dental care(some agencies now require inmates to pay a pittance fee usually 2-5 dollars to see a doctor, supposed to cut down on bogus medical calls) as well as a million other ridicioulas things these fools get.

2. There is no shame in incarceration anymore. I would see people come in to jail laughing and high fiving there buddies they have not seen in a while. I see people at public events laughingly refer to there "lock ups" like it is nothing. I see a culture of younger people where you are not considered "real" if you have not been locked up.

The solution:

Lock them up for real, bring back forced labor, chain gangs and the like. Why are we spending thousands of dollars for people to clean up trash when we have millions locked up. Put them all to work, sun up to sun down.  Let them be "real" farming a few thousand acres of land the old fashioned way.
