Hi, my name is Nick and had just a couple quick questions for Leo's out there. I read all  the forums on the polygraph but still didn't feel satisfied. A brief history about me is that i have never intentionally committed a crime besides speeding and Despite my lead foot i have never recieved a speeding ticket, knock on wood, but yet as I attend classes at the college here and here so many stories of people failing the exam it makes me nervous that I will not get to do the job that I have dreamed on doing since i could speak. I mean the only sip of alcohol I have ever had was an accident at communion and yet I worry that I am going to fail this test. What types of questions are on the test? Is there alot of Trickery on the exam to makeyourself backpeddle? How deep down and personal does it get? For those who respond I would like to thank you for taking the time out of your day to help. Have a good one,

Nick

The Examiner will usually go over things with you before the test. They will ask you all kinds of questions about alcohol use, theft, sexual matters, personal integrity, ect...and then write down what you tell them and base the questions off of that. As long as you tell them the truth in the question phase, the test should be fine, because in your mind, if you have told them everything there is nothing to be nervous about when they ask you the questions. Most of the questions should be something like .." Other than what you have told me already about you stealing the candy from the store when you were 5, is there any other theft you have committed after the age of 18"? You will be thinking that you committed murder, but you really did not..that is your mind playing with you. If you think there is something you should tell them before the test that may mess you up, make sure you tell them, or you will get nervous and fail that part and show deception.

You won't be tricked. They'll ask you questions about your past, things on your application,  personal habits....things like that. The polygraph is not intended to "trick" you. They just want to see if you'll tell the truth or did tell the truth. BE HONEST WITH EVERYTHING! Even if it is embarrassing to you. The test could get "deep down and personal".  Even going into sexual conduct with underaged partners ( you 19 / her 16, consensual or not)  The answers you give will not be shared, just the results of your attempted deception. Most important thing is to be honest!!

A lead foot or a small sip of alcohol is not going to bar you from a position in law enforcement. If it did, there would be about 99.99% of the LEOs in this country out of a job.

Unless you committed a felony,  they will not file any charges against you for what you confess to.  Telling the truth will do nothing but help you. Try to decieve, and they WILL disqualify you

Good luck!

Greg755 nailed it - that's exactly how it goes.

Be HONEST with everything up front, and the test will go fine.  You'll still probably be nervous, but that's natural.  Just don't figgit (sp), and all should go well.

The agency will either mail you a 30-40 page packet ahead of time or have you fill one out at the appointment date. Then the Examiner will go over the packet with you to make sure that you've understood and answered all the questions correctly and truthfully. After this, they will tell you the 10 questions that are being asked in the test, go over the process as a practice and then the real thing. Personally, I like doing the Polygraph over the Oral Board Interview any day.

Nick,

I'm not a LEO, but as a former military intelligence officer and co-founder of AntiPolygraph.org, I'm very familiar with polygraph procedure and the kinds of questions typically asked of law enforcement applicants during pre-employment polygraph examinations. Polygraph "testing" has no scientific basis and does indeed depend on trickery. The person being "tested" is not supposed to understand the basis on which truth versus deception is inferred. For a thorough debunking of polygraphy, and an exposition of the trickery on which it depends, see The Lie Behind the Lie Detector, which you can download as a 1 mb PDF file here:

http://antipolygraph.org/lie-behind-the-lie-detector.pdf

Also, for specific examples of the kinds of questions you might encounter, you'll find the questions asked by the LAPD listed here:
