My family is considering a visit to the big apple this summer. Any suggestions on where we should stay? Good places to eat? Any places we should definately avoid?

There are tons of places to stay where would primarily depend on your budget, there are decent places in all price ranges. It would also depend on what you are planning to see, if most of the attractions you want to visit are in Manhattan, it wouldn't be as convenient for you if you get a hotel by JFK or LaGuardia you would have to find your way into Manhattan each day from there. Places to eat, again there are thousands of great places throughout the city it depends on your taste and budget.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask me, on here on PM.  I've lived here my whole life and still do.

You should definitely see the main tourist sites, as they are unique and fun.  Times Square, Maybe a boat tour on the Circle Line, Empire State Building, Roosevelt Island Tram ride, The Museums*depending on what you like, Natural History is always a good time).

Other than that, ride the subway, eat a dirty water dog, NYC pretzel and a cold pepsi and you should be fine.

I visited the "Apple" in 2007 (June) and stayed in the New Yorker in Manhattan. Good food and pretty women in the area. Lots to do. Other than going to Jersey I did not leave Manhattan. Nice friendly folks. Excellent service at the hotel.

Don't use our taxi's, you'll go bankrupt after a few blocks... The transit system can get you anywhere.

Ya, thats absolutely true, especially if you get stuck in traffic.  Just get a metrocard, they have special ones for unlimited rides( make sure to figure out how many times you think you are going to ride it first.)  And when you are calculating, when you get off a train and then take a bus, the bus is free.

I agree with the above. Plan what you want to see and do on your stay and price everything out before you come down. NYC is big and expensive. Look for deals and coupons online. Be careful making hotel reservations. Some inexpensive places are in seedy neighborhoods. If you bring kids, you might want to visit Chelsea Piers, Central Park, Coney Island or visit Yankee stadium or Citi field. A definite spot you will like is the NYPD Police Museum and the NYPD Police Academy. Good luck on your travels.
