We're going to be moving to Tennessee in about a year....I'm working on my AS in Criminal Justice....do all depts there require you have that first before you can apply ? I noticed some do....and I won't have that degree till May 2009....is there some way around that ? So I can apply for a job in a dept in TN sooner ?

I know that the couple of departments I applied to here in CA don't require a degree. I know that it helps (makes the applicant look better) but they won't fault you if you don't have one. However, I'm almost positive that for something with the FBI you have to have a four year degree minimum. As I said, lots of departments don't require one but they will pay extra for it. I believe I get a 2.5% bonus (on top of the 5.5% at graduation of the academy) for having an AA/AS, and then it's an extra 2.5% for a BA/BS.

Depends on the department. Most smaller departments don't require a degree. Larger departments may require an associate degree or at least 60 hrs completed. Some departments require a 4 year degree, but this is rare. You will have to check the particular department you are interested in to see what they might require concerning secondary education.

Thank you all so much...but jlo2756 what do you mean by 60 hours completed ? Because I've seen that alot, but being new to this college scene, I'm not quite sure what that means....and at what point in this degree I will have that accomplished.

Where in TN are you trying to move. West, middle, or East TN? I know memphis was one of the ones that required 60 semester hrs. Your classes are broken down into credit hours for that specific tasking towards your career, major, minor, etc..

I believe Jackson, TN does not require it. I may be wrong. It is in West TN about half way between Memphis and Nashville.
